Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT SOMETHING NEW

Audrey accepted the trustees' offer.

But not as a Gallagher family representative.

As an independent restructuring executive.

She negotiated a contract that gave her authority over financial controls and project oversight.

Her first decision was to preserve a stalled affordable-housing development in Queens.

The project had been abandoned during the company's financial crisis.

Audrey reviewed the plans.

Then visited the construction site.

The building stood unfinished.

Concrete exposed.

Windows missing.

Weeds growing around the fence.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then smiled.

"This can be saved."

Her project manager frowned.

"It'll be expensive."

Audrey nodded.

"I know."

"The financing is complicated."

"I know."

He studied her.

"You're not worried?"

She laughed.

"I've spent six years worrying."

Then she looked toward the building.

"Now I'd like to build something."

Over the following months, Audrey assembled a new financing package, secured independent oversight, and brought the project back to life.

She also enrolled in evening architecture courses.

For the first time, her education belonged to her.

Mateo supported her.

But he didn't try to take over.

He asked questions.

Read her plans.

Celebrated her successes.

And when she was exhausted, he brought dinner.

One evening, she showed him a rendering of the completed housing development.

He studied it.

"It's beautiful."

Audrey smiled.

"You think so?"

"I do."

She looked at him.

"You're not just saying that?"

Mateo laughed.

"Audrey, you know I have terrible taste in interior design."

She laughed.

"True."

He smiled.

"But I know when someone has built something worth being proud of."

Audrey looked at the drawing.

Then at him.

May you like

And realized she was no longer waiting for her father to tell her she mattered.

She already knew.
