Chapter 9 - THE FIRST BIRTHDAY THAT BELONGED ONLY TO CALEB

Caleb turned one on a rainy Boston Sunday.

I invited forty people.

Emma reduced it to twelve.

Apparently growth had limits.

Hannah came.

So did Connie Russell—the emergency nurse who had handed me the clipboard instead of treating my surname like a triage category.

She enjoyed reminding me.

“I made you fill out paperwork.”

“You've told that story twelve times.”

“It improves.”

Caleb destroyed a small chocolate cake.

Emma protested the sugar.

Then gave him another bite.

Hypocrite.

Victoria was not invited.

That decision remained painful.

Necessary.

Her criminal case and civil proceedings were ongoing.

Lionel had begun cooperating.

New Harbor faced lawsuits and regulatory investigations.

No ending was neat.

But Caleb's birthday was not about them.

After everyone left, I found Emma in the nursery.

Caleb slept.

She stood over the crib.

“He looks like you when he's angry.”

“Unfortunate.”

“Very.”

Then she smiled.

“And sometimes like my dad.”

The words landed softly.

Not shocking anymore.

Belonging.

I stood beside her.

Not touching.

“Emma.”

“Yes?”

“Do you think there's any version of us beyond Caleb?”

She did not answer immediately.

Good.

I had learned waiting did not mean failure.

Finally:

“Maybe.”

My heart moved.

She pointed at me.

“Do not turn maybe into a ring.”

“I wasn't going to.”

“You own jewelers.”

“Unfair prejudice.”

She laughed.

Then:

“One dinner.”

I smiled.

“One.”

“No bodyguards at the table.”

“Reasonable.”

“No private dining room.”

“Cruel.”

“No talking about custody paperwork.”

“Agreed.”

She looked at me.

“And if it feels wrong, we stop.”

May you like

That mattered most.

“Agreed.”
