Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT I DESTROYED US

Three years earlier, my younger brother Michael was ambushed inside a warehouse in South Boston.

He survived.

Barely.

The attackers knew exactly where he would be.

Only six people had the schedule.

One was Emma.

She had asked where Michael and I were going because we were supposed to have dinner with her parents that evening.

I told her.

Later, Lionel brought me screenshots.

Messages from an account registered to Emma.

Warehouse address.

Arrival time.

Vehicle description.

Sent to a man connected to our rivals.

I went home insane with anger.

Emma stood in our kitchen.

Engagement ring on her hand.

Wedding invitations on the counter.

I threw the printed messages in front of her.

“What is this?”

She read them.

Her face changed.

“I didn't send these.”

“It's your account.”

“No.”

“Your phone number.”

“I don't know.”

“You knew where we were.”

“So did other people.”

“Who?”

“I don't know!”

I remembered every word.

She reached for me.

I stepped away.

That hurt her more than shouting.

Then I said the sentence that ended us.

“If my brother dies, I will never forgive myself for bringing you into this family.”

Emma went completely still.

Not:

If you betrayed me.

Bringing you into this family.

As though she were contamination.

Michael survived surgery.

Emma left before sunrise.

I never called.

She never came back.

Now forensic specialists reviewed those old records.

The account used to send the warehouse location had been created through a virtual number service.

Payment originated from a Vale administrative credit card.

Assigned user:

Lionel Ross's office.

The screenshots Lionel handed me were real.

The messages existed.

Emma simply hadn't sent them.

“Who did?” I asked.

Investigator's answer:

“We're still determining that.”

Then he showed me server access.

Someone downloaded Emma's personal contact file from the family-office system the day before the ambush.

Credentials:

Victoria Vale's executive assistant.

My mother again.

I stood.

Emma remained seated.

“Nicolas.”

I couldn't breathe.

Three years.

I had spent three years believing the woman I loved betrayed my family.

She had spent three years knowing I believed she was capable of it.

“I threw you out.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't let you explain.”

“You let me explain.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You decided my explanation was worth less than Lionel's paperwork.”

Worse.

Accurate.

“I am sorry.”

Emma looked at me.

“I believe you.”

Hope rose.

Then she finished:

“That doesn't fix it.”

Hope sat back down.

Fair.

“You lost three years because of them,” I said.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“I built a life.”

She stood.

“I became an attending physician.”

“I bought an apartment.”

“I made friends who never knew me as Nicolas Vale's fiancée.”

She looked through the glass toward Caleb.

“They stole choices from me.”

Then at me.

“You did too.”

That one belonged entirely to me.

No mother.

No lawyer.

No conspiracy could carry it.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Emma studied me.

May you like

Apparently she'd expected defense.

There wasn't any left.
