Chapter 7 - THE NINETEENTH STRIKE

The criminal case moved separately from Mercer Dynamics.

That was important.

The company was not a courtroom.

The board was not a jury.

My father was not justice.

Evidence mattered.

The riding belt was collected.

My injuries were documented.

The hallway footage established timing.

Vanessa initially minimized what she witnessed.

Then investigators confronted her with the fact that her own phone had been active during part of the incident.

Not recording video.

Audio.

She had accidentally left a voice memo running after dictating notes earlier.

The recording did not capture everything clearly.

But it captured enough.

My voice:

“They’re fake. Check the metadata.”

Adrian:

“Stop.”

Later:

My scream.

Then Adrian:

“You’re going to tell me who you sent them to.”

My voice counting under my breath.

Eleven.

Twelve.

Thirteen.

Vanessa saying:

“Adrian, maybe that’s enough.”

Interesting.

She had not intervened physically.

But by that point even she understood what was happening.

Then my voice:

“Nineteen.”

Adrian:

“Stop counting.”

And finally:

“Enough.”

The recording transformed the case.

Adrian eventually stopped describing the injuries as an accident during an argument.

Months later, through counsel, he accepted responsibility in a negotiated criminal resolution involving domestic assault charges, probationary conditions after a custodial component determined by the court, mandatory intervention programming, and a protective order.

I did not negotiate the criminal case.

I was consulted as a victim.

The prosecutor made charging decisions.

That mattered to me.

I did not want my father’s name affecting punishment.

I wanted the same process another woman should have received if her father had never managed a dollar.

The night before Adrian entered his plea, he sent a letter through attorneys.

I almost refused it.

Then read.

Claire,

I spent months saying Vanessa manipulated me because that explanation made me feel less monstrous. She manipulated me. The emails were fake. She wanted you discredited. All of that is true.

It is also irrelevant to the decision I made when I picked up the belt.

I stopped.

Then continued.

I could have opened the laptop.

I could have called IT.

I could have left the room.

I could have believed the woman I had slept beside for three years long enough to verify one page.

Instead, I decided my anger gave me authority over your body.

My hands started shaking.

He wrote:

There is no version of what happened where Vanessa made me do that.

That was the first true thing Adrian had given me since the assault.

It did not restore love.

May you like

But truth has value even when it arrives after the relationship that needed it.
