Chapter 6 - VANESSA’S LAST LIE

Vanessa resigned before Mercer could terminate her.

Then she hired an attorney.

Smart.

Her first position was that vendor issues were administrative.

Sixth Street Strategy had performed work.

Blue Mesa subcontracted legitimate creators.

Vantage handled crisis research.

Some of that was true.

That was why the scheme had lasted.

The forensic review eventually concluded that approximately $221,000 of the $386,240 required reimbursement, reclassification, or could not be supported by sufficient business purpose.

Not all of it vanished into Vanessa’s pocket.

Some paid actual contractors.

Some funded real advertising.

But roughly $96,000 ultimately traced to accounts benefiting Vanessa or members of her family without adequate disclosure.

Adrian had approved much of it.

Whether because he was careless, compromised by the affair, or knowingly helping her became the central question.

Then investigators found the necklace.

Not jewelry for Vanessa.

A watch.

$18,400.

Purchased by Sixth Street Strategy.

Given to Adrian for his birthday.

A vendor giving a company CEO an $18,400 watch would have violated Mercer’s gift policy several times over.

Adrian had never disclosed it.

More messages followed.

Vanessa:

You deserve something after everything you do for this place.

Adrian:

Claire will notice.

Vanessa:

Then don’t wear it around her.

That line told me more about their relationship than hotel receipts would have.

They had built intimacy around concealment.

Then came the message that destroyed Vanessa’s claim that the forged emails were merely an impulsive attempt to protect herself.

Three weeks before the assault:

If Claire keeps digging, Adrian is going to find out about Sixth Street. Need an exit story.

Sent from Vanessa to a college friend.

The friend replied:

What does that mean?

Vanessa:

Something that makes Claire the problem.

There it was.

The fake leak accusation had been planned.

Not necessarily the violence.

There was no evidence Vanessa asked Adrian to beat me.

But she had deliberately constructed a story intended to discredit me and stop the vendor review.

She succeeded more completely than she expected.

For a few hours.

Then everything collapsed.

Vanessa later offered cooperation regarding the vendor investigation.

Her attorney emphasized that Adrian approved payments.

Adrian’s attorney emphasized that Vanessa manipulated him.

I watched from a distance while two adults who had once hidden together began documenting each other.

I felt no satisfaction.

Only fatigue.

Affairs often look romantic while secrecy is shared.

They become administrative remarkably quickly when lawyers arrive.
