Chapter 6 - The Audio from the Mountain Ridge

At 9:00 AM on Wednesday, the Cathedral of Grace was draped in heavy black velvet banners and filled with floral wreaths of white lilies.

Over three hundred high-society executives, regional politicians, and media correspondents filled the carved oak pews beneath the towering stained-glass windows.

At the front of the altar stood an empty, polished mahogany casket surrounded by hundreds of burning white candles.

Michael Carter sat in the front pew, wearing dark sunglasses, dabbing his dry eyes with a linen handkerchief while Ashley sat beside him, holding his arm with theatrical solemnity.

The senior pastor stepped to the marble pulpit.

“Brothers and sisters, we gather in sorrow to honor the memory of Evelyn Carter and her unborn child, taken from us by the cruel hand of nature in the frozen peaks of our great mountains.”

Michael stood up, walking slowly up the altar steps, his head bowed in practiced, sorrowful despair.

He took the microphone, looking out at the flashing cameras of the press gallery.

“Evelyn was my world,” Michael choked out, forcing his voice to break with theatrical grief. “She was the light of my life. To lose her and our baby boy on that mountain… is a pain no man should ever endure. All I have left is the promise to honor her memory through our philanthropic work.”

Several guests in the front rows wiped away sympathetic tears.

In the back of the cathedral, the head of the insurance syndicate sat with a certified settlement check ready in a leather folio.

Michael paused, wiping his eyes. “I know Evelyn is looking down from heaven right now, at peace with our son.”
