Chapter 5 - MELISSA’S SECOND STORY

By the next afternoon, Melissa’s story changed again.

First:

Emily spilled food and threw a tantrum.

Then:

Emily fell.

Then:

I had staged the confrontation because I wanted favorable custody.

Then:

Mrs. Keller had always hated Melissa.

Then:

The video lacked context.

That last one was technically true.

Every video lacks something outside the frame.

So investigators looked for context.

Kitchen camera footage from our own security system showed the earlier meal.

Emily sat at the table wrapped in a blanket.

She tried to eat soup.

Her hand shook.

The spoon fell.

Soup spilled.

Melissa slammed her palm against the table.

The camera had no audio.

But body language mattered.

Then the backyard footage supplied the rest.

Medical imaging supplied injuries.

My 911 call supplied real-time statements.

Mrs. Keller supplied independent observation.

Texts supplied knowledge that Emily had a fever.

No single item carried the entire case.

Together they told a coherent story.

Melissa’s attorney stopped calling the incident “a misunderstanding.”
