Chapter 8 - VESCARI’S LAST ARGUMENT

Paul Vescari eventually admitted enough financial misconduct to resolve part of the legal case against him, while other claims were settled civilly.

He did not go down confessing everything.

Real people rarely do.

Through attorneys, he maintained one position until the end:

Vincent created the environment.

Employees believed harsh deductions because harshness fit the Castalano name.

When Rebecca repeated that argument, Vincent did not explode.

He became quiet.

Then:

“He’s right about that part.”

Renzo looked at him.

“Don’t give Paul too much credit.”

“I’m not.”

Vincent looked toward the estate windows.

“I made fear useful.”

“Then somebody used it.”

Exactly.

That realization affected more than payroll.

Vincent began separating himself from operations maintained primarily through intimidation.

Not overnight.

Not cleanly.

Legitimate businesses received professional management.

Security contracts were reviewed.

Cash-heavy ventures with questionable practices were sold or shut down where counsel advised.

He spent more time with lawyers.

Less time with men who called him boss.

I did not romanticize that.

Vincent had built his own reputation.

Changing late did not erase how he built it.

But stopping mattered.

Mia, naturally, cared about none of this.

May you like

She cared that Vincent’s kitchen stocked strawberry yogurt.
