Chapter 9 - THE SECOND SUNDAY DINNER

Three years after the first Sunday dinner, I hosted another.

At my condo.

Smaller table.

Same people.

David.

Sarah.

Richard.

Linda.

Little Arthur in a high chair throwing peas.

Nora too.

Because family is not only biology.

We ate roast chicken.

No strategic agenda.

Then David stood.

I immediately said:

“Sit down.”

Everyone laughed.

“No speeches.”

“One sentence.”

“Dangerous.”

He raised his glass.

“To Mom.”

I stared.

“Who taught me that helping someone does not make them helpless.”

That was acceptable.

Sarah added:

“And that a house is not a family retirement plan.”

Richard nearly choked on wine.

Linda laughed.

I raised my own glass.

“To paying your own internet bill.”

David groaned.

History preserved.

After dinner, he helped wash dishes.

Sarah packed leftovers.

Richard took out trash.

Linda played with Arthur.

No one behaved as though my hosting made me staff.

Simple.

Then David handed me an envelope.

I narrowed my eyes.

“What?”

“Open it.”

Inside was a printed confirmation.

A charitable donation.

$5,000 to the railroad-worker scholarship in Arthur’s name.

I stared.

“Why?”

David shrugged.

“Dad spent his life building something for us.”

“I spent a few years acting like inheritance was the main point.”

“It wasn’t.”

My eyes filled.

Then:

“This is our money.”

“Mine and Sarah’s.”

“No reimbursement.”

“No expectation.”

I looked at Sarah.

She nodded.

“We budgeted for it.”

Those may have been the sexiest words anyone ever said in my family.

May you like

I hugged them both.
