Chapter 8 - WHY LAUREN ALWAYS CAME FIRST

Dad asked to visit Lake Maribel in August.

He asked.

That alone mattered.

By then I could walk without the walker.

Slowly.

Painfully.

But independently.

We sat on the dock.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then Dad said:

“I owe you an apology.”

I waited.

“For the calls.”

“Yes.”

“For not coming.”

“Yes.”

“For telling everyone you were emotional afterward.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the water.

“When Lauren was born, she almost died.”

I knew.

Premature.

NICU.

Mom hemorrhaged.

Dad continued.

“For months, we thought every bad sound meant we were losing her.”

“When you were born three years later, you were healthy.”

“You slept.”

“You ate.”

“You barely cried.”

“We told everybody you were the easy baby.”

I swallowed.

“Then I became the easy child.”

He nodded.

“You got good grades.”

“You solved things.”

“You hated asking for help.”

“We praised that.”

“And somewhere along the way…”

He rubbed his face.

“We turned your strength into permission to give you less attention.”

That hurt because it was so accurate.

“And Lauren?”

“We never stopped seeing the baby in the incubator.”

“She’s thirty-eight.”

“I know.”

“Apparently part of us didn’t.”

Then Dad said:

“When she needed help moving, we went.”

“When you called from the hospital…”

He stopped.

“I thought hospitals mean doctors.”

“Lauren had boxes.”

I stared at him.

He laughed once, bitterly.

“Sounds horrible out loud.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

I believed him.

Then:

“I don’t care about the inheritance.”

I raised an eyebrow.

He almost smiled.

“I cared about the lake house.”

“Honesty helps.”

“I’m working on it.”

We sat quietly.

Then he said:

“What hurt most was learning Hannah became your emergency agent.”

“You weren’t acting like one.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“Can I earn that back?”

The old Miranda would have said yes before he finished.

The new one answered:

“I don’t know.”

Dad nodded.

No anger.

No argument.

Just:

“Fair.”

May you like

That was the first moment I believed he might.
