Chapter 9 - DAD CHOSE DIFFERENTLY

Two years after the attack, Dad called.

“I need to tell you something about your mother.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“She wants to host Christmas.”

“No.”

“I know.”

That surprised me.

Dad continued:

“I told her Noah only comes if you decide it’s appropriate.”

“And?”

“She said it was her house.”

“What did you say?”

Dad sighed.

“I told her the house didn’t outrank the child.”

I smiled despite myself.

Progress.

Mom had been attending counseling irregularly.

Some months she seemed changed.

Other months she returned to the same language.

Family unity.

Forgiveness.

Moving on.

Eventually, Dad stopped covering for that too.

He moved into a small apartment for six months.

Not divorce.

Space.

He told Mom:

“If keeping peace requires me to pretend what happened to Noah wasn’t serious, I don’t want that peace.”

I never asked him to leave her.

That decision belonged to him.

Mom changed more during those six months than during the previous two years.

Maybe consequences finally became real.

She wrote Noah a letter.

It said:

I was supposed to be one of the adults who protected you. I wasn’t.

Good start.

I cared more about keeping Dylan out of trouble than getting you help.

True.

I told myself I was protecting the family, but I was really protecting the version of the family I wanted people to see.

That sentence felt like progress.

Then:

You did not cause what happened by pressing your watch. You did the right thing.

I showed the letter to Noah’s therapist first.

Then to Noah.

He read it twice.

“Do I have to answer?”

“No.”

He put it in his desk.

Six months later, he sent Mom a text.

Thank you for saying I did the right thing.

Nothing more.

She did not demand more.

May you like

That was perhaps the strongest evidence she had changed.
