Chapter 6 - THE DINNER WE GOT WRONG AGAIN

Progress creates a dangerous illusion.

You begin believing you have learned the lesson permanently.

Then July Fourth arrived.

Twenty-three people.

Children running.

Music.

Grill smoke.

Three conversations in every room.

By six o’clock, Mom disappeared into the kitchen.

I found her arranging leftovers.

My heart sank.

“Mom.”

“I’m fine.”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

I almost accepted that.

Then I remembered Thanksgiving.

I pulled out a chair.

“Try again.”

She sighed.

“The hearing aids are working.”

“Okay.”

“But twenty people are still twenty people.”

I sat.

“You want to go home?”

“Yes.”

It hurt.

Not because she had done anything wrong.

Because I wanted the story to be solved.

We had moved the chair.

Adjusted hearing aids.

Turned off televisions.

Found community.

Shouldn’t she now enjoy every family gathering?

No.

That expectation was about me.

“I’ll drive you.”

Mom looked surprised.

“You’re not upset?”

“I’m disappointed.”

She frowned.

“With me?”

“No.”

I laughed.

“With reality.”

She smiled.

“I’m seventy-three. Reality and I have been disappointing each other for years.”

On the drive home, she said:

“Mara?”

“Yes?”

“You don’t have to redesign every party around me.”

“I don’t?”

“No.”

“You told me you were lonely.”

“I was.”

“And now?”

“I still get lonely.”

She looked at me.

“But sometimes I’m also tired.”

That was the difference.

Mom did not need every discomfort eliminated.

She needed permission to tell us which discomfort belonged to her.

We began giving her options.

Big holiday.

Small Sunday dinner.

Coffee alone with Hannah.

Baseball with Ben.

Community kitchen.

Some invitations she accepted.

Others she declined.

We stopped treating no as evidence she was withdrawing.

And she stopped saying “I prefer being alone” when what she actually meant was “this room is too exhausting.”

Our language became more accurate.

Our relationship became easier.

Truth often does that.
