Chapter 8 - THE DIVORCE HE DIDN’T WANT ANYMORE

The week before final mediation, Mark asked to meet.

Public café.

He looked tired.

“Don’t sign yet.”

I knew.

“I want to try counseling.”

“No.”

“We never really tried.”

“I did.”

“Not with the truth.”

That was fair.

He continued.

“I know who you are now.”

I almost smiled.

“That is not why the marriage ended.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

He leaned forward.

“I chose Mom’s comfort over your career.”

“Yes.”

“I let her talk to you like you were a guest in our marriage.”

“Yes.”

“I spent money while letting her criticize yours.”

“Yes.”

“And when you said you were leaving, I signed because I thought you’d come back once you realized you couldn’t afford life alone.”

There.

The ugliest truth.

“You thought dependence would punish me.”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

I appreciated the honesty.

Then:

“I’m ashamed.”

“I know.”

“Can people change?”

“Yes.”

His eyes opened.

“Then why not us?”

Because change does not create entitlement to a second chance.

“I hope you change.”

I said softly.

“But I don’t want to use another two years of my life to test whether you did.”

He cried.

So did I.

Then we signed the final settlement.

The divorce decree was entered five weeks later.

No dramatic courtroom.

No ruined man.

Just two signatures before a judge.

Marriage ended.

May you like

Life continued.
