Chapter 9 - THE MAN WHO KNELT

Four years after the cellar, Harper asked about it.
She was eight.
Old enough to remember fragments.
Not enough to understand.
“Why was Mommy behind the door?”
Mia looked at Dominic.
He did not answer for her.
Good.
Mia explained simply.
“Some people wanted to hide something important.”
“What?”
“Money that belonged to our family.”
Harper frowned.
“They locked you up for money?”
“Yes.”
“That’s stupid.”
Dominic almost laughed.
“Correct.”
Harper looked at him.
“Did you save her?”
Dominic started:
“I—”
Mia interrupted.
“He opened the door.”
Harper waited.
Mia continued.
“Lots of people helped after.”
Daniel.
Marcus.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Investigators.
Mia herself.
Even Harper.
Especially Harper.
“You heard me,” Mia said.
Harper’s eyes widened.
“I saved you?”
“You told the truth when adults told you something else.”
Harper thought.
Then:
“So I saved you.”
Dominic smiled.
“Apparently you did.”
She looked proud.
That mattered.
The family story would not become:
Powerful mafia boss rescues helpless maid.
No.
A four-year-old noticed her mother never left without a kiss.
She listened to slow knocking.
She told someone.
Mia survived.
Dominic acted.
Many people did their jobs.
Truth moved.
Better story.
Later, Mia asked Dominic:
“Do you remember kneeling?”
“What?”
“On the staircase.”
“When Harper told you.”
“Yes.”
“You scared everyone.”
“I was being gentle.”
“Exactly.”
Dominic looked confused.
Mia smiled.
“That was the first time most of the staff ever saw you lower yourself for anyone.”
He thought.
“I should have done it earlier.”
Yes.
Not literally.
May you like
But in every way that mattered.
