Chapter 7 - CLAIRE BENNETT’S LAST PERFORMANCE

Claire’s case took longer.
She maintained that Nathan manipulated her.
Some of that was true.
Not enough.
Evidence showed she:
Helped remove the trust documents from the cellar.
Ordered the padlock.
Provided Mia false information about a family trip.
Instructed staff not to search.
Sent Harper to sleep in a guest room away from the basement corridor.
And drafted a false resignation email from Mia’s account.
That last one mattered.
Claire had planned to make Mia’s disappearance look voluntary.
Then after the wedding, a message from Claire to Nathan read:
Once Vale signs, Carter becomes a separate problem.
Rachel read it aloud during deposition.
Claire cried.
“I meant legal problem.”
Maybe.
But another message:
She won’t stay reasonable once she knows the amount.
And:
The child makes this messy.
Mia stared.
Harper.
A four-year-old reduced to “messy.”
Claire eventually accepted a plea agreement involving unlawful confinement, conspiracy, fraud, and obstruction-related charges.
She received prison time.
Not life.
Years.
Her father’s firm paid civil penalties and settlements after regulators uncovered its role in attempted asset transfers.
Nathan received a much longer sentence for financial crimes, fiduciary theft, conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, and obstruction.
At sentencing, he looked at Dominic.
“You owe me everything.”
Dominic said nothing.
Nathan continued:
“I saved your empire.”
Maybe he had.
That was part of the tragedy.
Dominic’s attorney whispered:
“Do not respond.”
Dominic didn’t.
Later Mia asked:
“What would you have said?”
Dominic thought.
“That if an empire can only be saved by stealing from a child, it deserves to fail.”
Mia nodded.
“Good.”
Dominic reorganized Vale Holdings.
Sold several companies tied heavily to criminal activity.
Entered cooperation agreements.
Paid fines.
Lost assets.
Dismissed men who had confused loyalty with immunity.
There were investigations into Dominic too.
He did not evade them.
Some matters ended in civil settlements.
Others required cooperation and forfeiture.
He retained legal businesses.
Shipping.
Construction.
Warehousing.
Restaurants.
But the old Vale organization changed.
People called it weakness.
Dominic no longer cared.
One newspaper headline:
THE VALE EMPIRE SHRINKS.
Mia clipped it.
Dominic saw it on her refrigerator.
“You enjoy this.”
“Immensely.”
Harper drew a smiley face beside his photograph.
Humiliating.
May you like
Healthy.
