Chapter 9 - THE LETTER HIDDEN IN THE RING
Roman's silver ring contained a secret.
Griffin discovered it by accident.
She was helping her mother organize old jewelry when the tiny crescent along the ring's edge shifted.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a folded strip of paper.
Griffin stared.
“Mom?”
Roman looked up.
“What?”
Griffin held out the paper.
“Did you know about this?”
Roman went pale.
She unfolded it carefully.
Three numbers.
A date.
And a name.
VITTORIO MORETTI — 11/17/03.
Roman covered her mouth.
Griffin frowned.
“What is it?”
Roman's hands trembled.
“Your father gave me that ring the night before the explosion.”
Griffin looked at the numbers.
“What do they mean?”
Roman swallowed.
“A bank account.”
Griffin stared.
Roman continued.
“I was investigating missing money from the shipping company.”
Her voice broke.
“I thought I'd lost the records when I ran.”
Griffin looked at the ring.
“But you didn't.”
Roman shook her head.
“No.”
She stared at the paper.
“I hid the account reference inside the ring.”
Griffin's heart pounded.
“Then this could prove what Vittorio did.”
