Chapter 7 - THE HOUSEKEEPER WHO HAD BEEN A NURSE

Elena found me in the conservatory that afternoon.
Mia was asleep upstairs.
The house was quiet.
She stood near the doorway.
"Mr. Duca?"
I looked up.
"Come in."
She hesitated.
"I need to tell you something."
I nodded.
She sat opposite me.
Then took a deep breath.
"I wasn't always a housekeeper."
I waited.
"I trained as a nurse."
That explained things.
The careful way she monitored my mother's breathing.
The way she recorded medication times.
The way she noticed changes other people dismissed.
"What happened?"
Elena looked down.
"My husband died in a construction accident four years ago."
"I'm sorry."
She nodded.
"Afterward, I couldn't afford to finish my licensing requirements. I worked wherever I could."
I looked at her.
"And you came here."
"Yes."
She hesitated.
"Your mother knew."
I frowned.
"She knew you had nursing training?"
Elena nodded.
"She asked me to help her communicate."
I stared.
"How?"
Elena smiled sadly.
"We developed a system."
She held up one finger.
"One tap meant yes."
Two fingers.
"Two meant no."
Then three.
"Three meant danger."
My chest tightened.
I remembered Isabella striking the wheelchair armrest.
Three times.
Over and over.
I had thought it was a symptom.
It was a warning.
Elena continued.
"Vivien noticed."
I looked up.
"That's when the threats started."
Elena nodded.
"She said if I kept encouraging your mother to communicate, she'd make sure I lost everything."
I stared.
"Why didn't you tell me about your training?"
Elena looked embarrassed.
"Because I didn't want you to think I was pretending to be a licensed nurse."
I shook my head.
"You weren't."
She nodded.
"I only wanted to help."
I looked toward the garden.
Mia's small red bicycle stood near the fountain.
For three months, Elena had protected my mother while fearing for her daughter.
And I had barely noticed her.
I turned back.
"Elena."
She looked at me.
"Thank you."
Her eyes filled.
I continued.
"Not because you work here."
I swallowed.
"Because you stayed when it was dangerous."
She shook her head.
"I stayed because your mother needed someone."
I smiled sadly.
"That's exactly why I'm thanking you."
For the first time, Elena smiled without fear.
And something in my chest shifted.
Not love.
Not yet.
May you like
Something quieter.
Respect.
