Chapter 10 - THE DOCTOR WHO SOLD HIS SILENCE

Dr. Adrian Bell was arrested three days later on charges connected to falsified medical records and financial misconduct.
Investigators found payments from a company controlled by Victor Salerno.
The payments coincided with changes to Isabella's treatment.
Bell initially denied wrongdoing.
Then the records were placed before him.
He requested an attorney.
Later, through counsel, he began cooperating.
His statements helped investigators understand how Isabella's care had been manipulated.
He claimed Vivien had pressured him.
He claimed Victor had arranged the payments.
He claimed he'd believed Isabella's condition would remain stable.
The investigators examined those claims rather than accepting them at face value.
Meanwhile, my mother's condition slowly improved.
She became more alert.
Her speech therapist introduced a communication board.
She could now choose words without struggling to force every syllable past her lips.
One afternoon, I sat beside her.
She pointed to three words.
ELENA SAVED ME.
I smiled.
"Yes, Mom."
Then she pointed again.
MIA TOO.
I laughed softly.
"Especially Mia."
Isabella smiled.
A real smile.
The first I'd seen in months.
Then she looked toward the doorway.
Elena stood there carrying tea.
My mother reached for her hand.
Elena approached.
Isabella pointed to the board.
THANK YOU.
Elena began crying.
"Oh, Mrs. Duca."
Isabella squeezed her hand.
I watched them.
Two women who had survived months of fear together.
One unable to speak.
The other afraid nobody would listen.
And somehow, they'd protected each other.
I looked at Elena.
She met my eyes.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Mia ran into the room.
"Grandma Bella!"
Isabella smiled.
Mia climbed onto the chair beside her.
"Look!"
She held up a drawing.
Three stick figures.
A house.
A bright yellow sun.
And a fourth figure standing near the door.
I pointed.
"Who's that?"
Mia grinned.
"Uncle Lorenzo."
I smiled.
"And what am I doing?"
She looked at me seriously.
"Coming home."
My throat tightened.
Because for the first time in years, I understood what home was supposed to mean.
Not a mansion.
Not a family name.
May you like
Not a fortune.
A place where nobody had to be afraid.
