Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO TOOK BACK HER NAME

The documents Natalie provided changed the investigation.

They included internal correspondence, altered financial records, and evidence of forged authorizations.

Victor had created an elaborate structure of accounts and approvals.

My name appeared repeatedly.

But so did discrepancies.

Incorrect initials.

Inconsistent signatures.

Dates when I had been outside the country.

Rebecca worked with forensic accountants to establish the timeline.

Damian's legal team cooperated.

Authorities expanded their investigation.

Eventually, Victor was located in a private residence outside Reno.

He was arrested.

The news reached me while I was standing in Grace's bookstore.

I had begun helping her organize a small literary festival.

It was the first work I'd done in years that felt like mine.

Grace looked at my face.

“What happened?”

I smiled.

“They found him.”

She hugged me.

For months, I'd lived with the fear that someone would believe I had stolen money from my husband's company.

Now the evidence was beginning to show how thoroughly I'd been manipulated.

But the most important change wasn't the arrest.

It was what I did afterward.

I opened a bank account in my own name.

I rented a small apartment.

I resumed work in arts programming.

I continued my medical appointments.

I met regularly with a counselor.

And I told Damian I wanted a formal separation.

We met in Rebecca's office.

Damian arrived alone.

He looked tired.

Older.

The arrogance I'd once mistaken for strength had faded.

I placed the separation agreement on the table.

He read it carefully.

Then looked up.

“Is this what you want?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Do you want a divorce?”

I took a breath.

“I don't know yet.”

He looked down.

I continued.

“But I know I can't come back to the marriage we had.”

Damian nodded.

“I understand.”

I studied him.

“Do you?”

He met my eyes.

“I'm beginning to.”

For a moment, I saw the man I'd married.

Not the kingpin.

Not the businessman.

Just Damian.

The man who had once burned breakfast because he was too busy kissing me.

Then I reminded myself that memories weren't enough.

I signed the agreement.

He signed too.

When I left the office, I wasn't wearing my wedding ring.

May you like

But for the first time in years, I felt as though I had something more important.

My own name.
