Chapter 9 - FLORA STERLING AGAIN

The divorce finalized fourteen months after my birthday.

I restored my maiden name.

Flora Sterling.

No dramatic applause.

Just paperwork.

I recovered my share of marital assets.

The $420,000 diverted toward Clover’s condominium was returned through settlement and asset recovery.

I kept none of Isaac’s premarital family holdings.

Did not want them.

My own Sterling interests had always remained separate under prenup.

That mattered.

I bought a home outside Manhattan.

Not a palace.

Old brick.

Large kitchen.

Garden.

Security good enough to make Noah stop complaining.

Mostly.

My brothers visited too often.

Leo reorganized my garage.

Uninvited.

Caleb installed smart cameras.

Also uninvited.

Julian argued that both constituted sibling trespass.

Marcus arrived with spreadsheets for household budgeting as a joke.

Noah brought dinner.

That was family.

Annoying.

Safe.

I returned to my work.

I had spent much of my career in philanthropic infrastructure and disaster-recovery funding.

Isaac always described it as “Flora’s charity stuff.”

After the divorce, I accepted the executive director role at Sterling Resilience Fund.

We financed:

Emergency housing.

Community clinics.

Infrastructure repairs.

Domestic-violence legal aid.

Not because every wounded woman must turn pain into nonprofit branding.

I already cared about the work.

Now I had more time for it.

Three years later, I met Daniel Mercer.

Architect.

Widower.

Two teenage daughters.

No criminal empire.

No secret fortune.

No dramatic entrance.

He forgot our first lunch because of a school emergency with his youngest daughter.

Then called and apologized without explaining why I should understand.

I liked that.

We became friends.

Then more.

Slowly.

Before our first real date, he asked:

“Anything I should know?”

I thought.

“My brothers are intrusive.”

“How many?”

“Five.”

He became pale.

I laughed.

“They’re house-trained.”

Mostly.

Daniel did not rescue me.

May you like

That was another reason I loved him later.
