Chapter 3 - ISAAC’S VERSION OF THE PARTY

Isaac was arrested before dawn on assault-related charges.

He posted bail the next afternoon.

His attorney immediately went to the press.

According to Isaac:

My birthday incident had been a “private marital role-play misunderstanding.”

I stared at the television.

Noah swore.

Julian did not.

That was more dangerous.

The attorney continued:

“Mrs. Vance participated voluntarily in a consensual private ritual that was unfortunately witnessed by guests after emotions escalated.”

I laughed.

Then stopped because my back hurt.

Consensual.

Of course.

Isaac needed a new story.

The videos destroyed most of it.

At least thirteen guests had recordings.

One showed Isaac ordering security to tie my wrists after I refused to apologize to Clover.

Another showed me saying:

“Isaac, stop.”

Three times.

The catering server, Marissa, gave investigators the clearest testimony.

She had heard Isaac say:

“Thirty for thirty-four years wasted on an ungrateful wife.”

Then Wendy corrected him:

“She’s thirty-four, not thirty.”

Isaac laughed.

“Thirty is enough.”

That detail turned my stomach.

It had not been spontaneous.

It was performance.

Punishment.

Humiliation.

Then Clover’s attorney released a statement saying she had never asked Isaac to strike me.

Technically true.

Video showed her smiling.

Laughing once.

Accepting my forced apology.

But she did not order the assault.

Important distinction.

I hated her.

The law did not need my hatred to inflate her role.

Then Clover filed a complaint.

Against me.

She claimed I had intentionally spilled wine on her and threatened her three weeks earlier after discovering “a personal relationship” with Isaac.

The threat supposedly was:

“You have no idea what family you’re dealing with.”

I had never said it.

But it sounded dramatic enough for tabloids.

Caleb found the restaurant security footage from the actual confrontation three weeks earlier.

I had said:

“You have no idea what marriage you’re entering.”

Much less exciting.

Much more true.

The footage showed me walking away.

Complaint weakened.

Then my own divorce filing became public.

I filed two days after the hospital discharge.

No dramatic asset grab.

Prenup.

Independent property.

Marital property subject to accounting.

Protective order.

Exclusive use of my Manhattan apartment, not the Vance estate.

I did not want their house.

The estate belonged to a Vance holding company anyway.

Isaac called.

He was prohibited from contacting me directly.

So he used his mother’s phone.

Another mistake.

“Flora.”

I hung up.

Then a voicemail appeared.

“You’re destroying everything because of one bad night.”

One bad night.

I forwarded it to Julian.

Protective-order violation documented.

Isaac called again.

Wendy’s number.

“Answer me!”

Second violation.

Then:

“You know I love you.”

Third.

By sunset, his bail conditions were reviewed.

His attorney finally convinced him to stop.

The man who had controlled every room in his life had discovered that a court order did not care how loudly he explained.
