Chapter 3 - The Illusion of Grandeur

The weeks flew by in a blur of legal maneuvers and social pageantry. While Celeste spent her days selecting floral arrangements of white hydrangeas and pastel roses, Daniel and I were performing a quiet autopsy on Vanguard Holdings.

Grant’s arrogance was our greatest asset. He was so secure in his victory that he stopped checking his corporate ledger. He began delegating final approval authority to Marcus Vance, his Chief Operating Officer.

Marcus was a sharp, calculating man with an ivy-league pedigree and a quiet demeanor. He had been with Vanguard for four years, always playing the loyal soldier to Grant’s erratic, loud leadership.

“Grant signed the revised board resolutions,” Daniel reported on a Tuesday afternoon. We were sitting in the conference room of Mercer Hale, surrounded by stacks of financial reports. “He didn't even read the riders. By signing these, he has authorized the transfer of Vanguard’s core operating licenses to a subsidiary company called Aegis Logistics.”

“And who owns Aegis?” I asked, smiling.

“A private holding company completely controlled by your family trust,” Daniel said. “In simple terms, Grant just signed away the actual engine of Vanguard. He still owns the brand name, the office furniture, and the lease on the building. But the licenses required to operate? Those now belong to you.”

I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out at the Manhattan skyline. “He’s trading a gold mine for a handful of glitter. What about Celeste?”

“Our private investigator has been tracking her visits to the Soho Grand Hotel,” Daniel said, sliding a manila folder across the table. “She’s been meeting Marcus Vance there every Thursday afternoon. They’ve been using a corporate credit card issued to Vanguard to pay for the penthouse suite.”

I opened the folder. The photographs were incredibly clear. There was Celeste, her baby bump visible beneath a silk trench coat, leaning in to kiss Marcus in the hotel lobby. Another photograph showed Marcus holding her hand as they walked out of an upscale baby boutique, carrying bags of luxury infant wear.

“Does Grant have any idea?” I asked.

“None,” Daniel said. “He’s too busy planning his wedding suit. He’s having a custom tuxedo made with 24-karat gold thread woven into the lapels. He wants to look like royalty.”

“He will look like a fool,” I murmured. “Does Marcus know about Grant’s vasectomy?”

“No. Marcus believes Celeste's child is his—which it is—and that they are going to use the child to secure a permanent stake in Vanguard once Grant divorces you and names the baby his sole heir.”

I closed the folder with a satisfying snap. “So, Celeste is playing both of them. She’s letting Grant believe he’s getting his precious son, and she’s letting Marcus believe they’re going to steal the company together.”

“Exactly,” Daniel said. “But they’ve both forgotten one thing: the money was never Grant’s to begin with.”
