Chapter 1 - THE DAUGHTER BETWEEN THE TREES

My husband started turning off his phone location every time he left the house. At first, I told myself it was probably a glitch.

Then the excuses became harder to believe.

So one afternoon, I followed him.

And when I discovered where he had really been going, I realized the truth was far more complicated than the affair I had been imagining.

Daniel and I had been married for six years, and until recently, I had always considered our marriage strong.

We rarely fought.

We still reached for each other’s hands when we walked together.

And four months earlier, after years of hoping and waiting, we had finally welcomed twin boys.

Since we first started dating, Daniel and I had shared our phone locations. It was never about spying on each other. It was simply practical, especially when one of us was driving late at night or traveling alone.

Then one afternoon, while I was trying to soothe one crying baby and prepare a bottle for the other, I realized we were almost out of formula.

I opened the location app to see whether Daniel happened to be near the grocery store.

His location was unavailable.

When he came home, I tried to sound casual.

“Did you turn off your location?”

Daniel set the grocery bags on the counter without looking at me.

“Probably some software update. Those apps mess up all the time.”

I accepted that explanation.

The first time.

Then it happened again.

And again.

Over the next two weeks, I noticed a pattern that became impossible to ignore.

Daniel’s location worked perfectly whenever he was at home.

But within minutes of his truck leaving our driveway, his location disappeared.

Every time I mentioned it, he became defensive.

“Why are you constantly checking where I am?”

“I’m not checking on you. I just noticed.”

He sighed.

“Megan, you’re exhausted. You barely sleep anymore. Maybe you’re reading too much into things.”

That answer bothered me.

But what came next bothered me even more.

Daniel started taking his phone into the shower.

Then he changed his passcode.

Several nights, I woke up and found his side of the bed empty.

Whenever I asked where he had been, he always had some vague explanation.

Getting water.

Checking on the twins.

Couldn’t sleep.

None of it felt right.

Then, the following Thursday, Daniel suddenly grabbed his keys.

“I have an emergency meeting.”

I looked up from the couch.

“At the office?”

“Yeah.”

He leaned down and kissed my forehead.

“I’ll probably be late. Don’t wait up.”

The moment the front door closed behind him, I called my mother.

“Can you come stay with the twins for a little while?”

Twenty minutes later, I was in my car.

I wasn’t proud of following my husband.

But by then, I knew something was wrong.

Daniel drove directly past his office.

Then past the shopping center.

Then the hospital.

He kept going until we were several miles outside town.

Finally, he turned into a quiet memorial park surrounded by tall trees.

I parked far enough away that he wouldn’t recognize my car.

Then I followed him on foot.

Daniel walked toward an old oak tree carrying a small box.

Someone was already waiting there.

A young woman.

For a moment, I assumed she was a coworker.

Then my stomach tightened.

Maybe this was the person I had been afraid of finding.

Daniel stopped in front of her and opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Pictures of our newborn twins.

My heart started pounding.

The young woman barely glanced at them before pushing the box back toward him.

Then she said something that made me freeze.

“I don’t want any more pictures, Dad.”

Dad.

My hand flew to my mouth.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Isla…”

She stared at him angrily.

“They’re my brothers. How much longer am I supposed to pretend they don’t exist?”

Brothers.

In a single second, every theory I had built inside my head collapsed.

This wasn’t a secret girlfriend.

This wasn’t an affair.

Daniel had a daughter.

A daughter I knew absolutely nothing about.

Then he suddenly turned.

His eyes found me standing between the trees.

The color drained from his face.

“Megan…”

I looked at the girl.

Then back at my husband.

Now that I knew, the resemblance was impossible to miss.

She had his eyes.

His expression.

The same features around the mouth and jaw.

And in that moment, I understood that Daniel hadn’t been secretly leaving the house to meet another woman.

He had been hiding an entire part of his life from me.

For six years.

Possibly longer.

“Oh God, Daniel…”

My voice barely worked.

May you like

“What have you done?”
