Chapter 7 - LUCA FINALLY STOPPED CALLING IT A JOKE

The criminal case was modest compared with the civil chaos.
The cake incident resulted in an assault-related charge based on the evidence and local law.
Luca’s attorney negotiated.
No sensational prison sentence.
He entered an agreement involving accountability requirements, counseling, compliance conditions, and consequences determined through the legal process.
People expected me to be angry.
I wasn’t.
I wanted safety.
Record.
Accountability.
Not theatrical destruction.
The greater consequence happened privately.
Luca entered a certified intervention program.
At first, according to Anthony, he complained constantly.
The court.
Me.
The prenup.
Phoebe.
Wendy.
Alcohol.
Stress.
The cake table.
Everyone had apparently assaulted me except Luca.
Then, months later, Anthony stopped giving me updates because I asked him to.
Important.
Luca’s recovery was not my project.
I needed my own life.
Carroway Medical Systems completed its strategic sale fourteen months after my wedding.
My shares became liquid.
After taxes and restructuring, I received a substantial amount.
More money than I had ever controlled personally.
But the first thing I bought was not a mansion.
It was locks.
New apartment.
New security.
Then I laughed at myself.
After that:
Therapy.
A long vacation with Phoebe.
A standing desk.
Very glamorous.
I also returned to Carroway as a transition adviser for one year.
Work mattered.
Not because I needed to prove independence.
Because I had spent too long shrinking my professional life to avoid making Luca feel insignificant.
The first board meeting after the acquisition, I spoke for forty minutes.
Nobody interrupted.
I nearly cried afterward.
Then I did something inside the company that mattered more to me than any public revenge.
We implemented a confidential emergency-leave and legal-resource policy for employees dealing with domestic abuse, stalking, or coercive control.
Not a foundation.
Not my name on a building.
An HR policy.
Paid emergency days.
Security assistance.
Short-term legal consultations.
Payroll changes when joint accounts were unsafe.
Practical.
Boring.
Useful.
I did not tell employees why I pushed for it.
They did not need my trauma as branding.
Phoebe knew.
She hugged me.
Then said:
“You know what I hate?”
“What?”
“That cake probably cost eight thousand dollars.”
I stared.
“Nine.”
She screamed.
Healing.
Then, sixteen months after the wedding, Mara received a proposal from Luca’s lawyer.
Final divorce settlement.
Most property questions were straightforward because of the prenup.
Separate remained separate.
Joint accounts divided.
Wedding expenses disputed and eventually resolved.
Ferraro Performance remained Luca’s.
Carroway remained mine.
But Luca requested one additional provision.
A written factual statement attached to the settlement.
I read it.
I, Luca Ferraro, acknowledge that the cake incident at our wedding reception was not requested, invited, or consented to by Jessica. I physically forced her face into the cake, and afterward I attempted to minimize my conduct by describing it as a joke.
I stared.
There was more.
I also acknowledge that prior to the marriage I engaged in controlling conduct, including interference with her phone, intimidation during arguments, and behavior that caused her to fear leaving.
My hands shook.
Not because I needed his confession legally anymore.
Because for almost two years the argument had been:
Did it happen the way I remember?
Now the person who caused it wrote:
Yes.
Mara asked:
“Do you want this?”
“Yes.”
“Any changes?”
I thought.
“One.”
We added:
This statement is provided without requiring Jessica to forgive or reconcile with me.
When Luca reviewed it, he accepted.
The divorce became final.
Marriage length:
Eighteen months legally.
Relationship:
Nearly five years.
Wedding reception together:
Less than four hours.
I walked out of the courthouse with Phoebe.
No champagne.
No revenge dress.
Jeans.
Coffee.
She asked:
“How do you feel?”
I considered.
“Hungry.”
We got tacos.
That was the ending of my marriage.
Not glamorous.
May you like
Delicious.
