Chapter 8 - BRANDON’S TRIAL WAS NOT ABOUT MY COMEBACK

The case never became the theatrical courtroom spectacle reporters wanted.

The evidence was too substantial.

Gretchen’s cooperation.

Insurance records.

Travel messages.

Medical questions.

Financial motive.

My testimony.

Rescue records.

His false statements.

Phone-location data.

The original text telling me to continue hiking despite my objections.

Witnesses.

Brandon’s attorneys challenged pieces.

That was their job.

They argued Gretchen minimized her role.

Questioned memory after trauma.

Pointed out there was no camera recording the push.

All fair areas for adversarial testing.

Then prosecutors presented the simplest evidence.

I had told Daniel Mercer:

My husband did this

before I knew whether Brandon had reported me dead.

Before lawyers.

Before insurance.

Before revenge.

Minutes after rescue.

My first account had been consistent.

Then there was Brandon’s own voice.

Not from the cliff.

From a voice memo recovered from Gretchen’s phone.

Recorded accidentally two days before Montana.

Brandon:

Once she’s gone, the board doesn’t fight me. The policy handles the debt and Lucas—if it’s a boy—becomes the future.

Gretchen:

Don’t say this stuff out loud.

Brandon:

Relax.

The jury heard it.

So did I.

Lucas.

He already knew our son’s name.

We had discussed it once.

He had turned our unborn child into part of the plan.

Brandon was convicted on multiple serious counts.

The court imposed a lengthy sentence.

I do not remember the exact sound in the courtroom when it happened.

I remember Lucas.

He was ten months old.

At home with my mother.

I remember wanting to leave.

So I did.

Outside, reporters shouted:

“Emily!”

“Do you feel justice was served?”

“Do you forgive him?”

“Do you have a message?”

I stopped.

Not because I owed them.

Because I finally knew what I wanted to say.

“My son and I survived.”

Pause.

“That is the part of the story I care about.”

May you like

Then I walked away.
