Chapter 5 - Victoria’s Birthday Gift

The financial investigation moved faster than Liam expected.

He had always believed fraud looked like secret suitcases and offshore accounts.

Often, it looked like invoices.

The three false vendors had billed Vance Urban Partners for consulting, materials, and project management.

No services were performed.

Money flowed into accounts controlled by Victoria and Liam.

Some funded parties, clothing, private travel, and the renovation of Victoria’s country-club home.

Other money disappeared.

I found it in a trust created for a child named Olivia Vance.

I knew no Olivia.

Serena requested the trust documents.

The beneficiary’s date of birth was three years earlier.

The trustee was Liam.

The secondary trustee was a woman named Celeste Morgan.

Celeste had worked as an interior designer on one of Liam’s condominium projects.

I remembered her.

She once attended our housewarming party and left abruptly when I entered the kitchen.

Investigators contacted her.

She arrived at Serena’s office carrying a little girl with Liam’s eyes.

Olivia was his daughter.

Celeste had learned I existed only after she became pregnant. Liam told her our marriage was ending.

When she threatened to expose him, Victoria intervened.

She offered housing, money, and a trust for Olivia in exchange for silence.

Celeste accepted because she was frightened and alone.

“I’m not proud of it,” she said.

I looked at the child coloring beside her.

“She is innocent.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with tears.

“So is your baby.”

The trust had been funded partly with stolen company money.

That explained why Liam remained so desperate to control the accounts.

He was supporting a hidden daughter, an affair, his mother’s lifestyle, and his own image using money that belonged to investors and clients.

“Did Liam see Olivia?” I asked.

“Sometimes.”

“Did he love her?”

Celeste looked down.

“He liked when she was happy to see him.”

That was not an answer.

It was also the most accurate answer possible.

Celeste agreed to cooperate.

Her messages with Liam and Victoria revealed another plan.

After Hope’s birth, Liam intended to divorce me, claim I was unfit, and move Celeste into our home.

Victoria disliked Celeste but preferred a daughter-in-law she could financially control.

In one message, Victoria wrote:

Audrey believes education makes her independent. Celeste understands gratitude.

Celeste read the message during her interview.

Her face changed.

For years, she had believed Victoria protected her.

Now she understood she had been categorized as easier to dominate.

The women in Liam’s life had been kept apart so we could not compare stories.

Once we entered the same room, his version collapsed.

The company board terminated Liam.

He was also removed from all financial authority.

A receiver took control of disputed assets.

The birthday party became part of the fraud case because corporate funds paid for it.

Every centerpiece, bottle of champagne, and musician had been charged as “executive client development.”

Most guests were family friends.

Victoria had unknowingly hosted investigators’ favorite piece of evidence.

She sent Liam frantic messages.

You said the invoices were protected.

Destroy Celeste’s agreement.

Audrey cannot know about Olivia.

Liam replied:

Stop writing things down.

Too late.

Detective Bell arrested him outside his attorney’s office.

Charges included unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment, financial fraud, identity theft, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.

Reporters waited near the entrance.

Liam covered his face.

Victoria pushed through the crowd shouting that her son had done nothing wrong.

Then a journalist asked whether she instructed Liam to lock me inside.

For the first time, Victoria stopped speaking.

She was arrested the following morning for conspiracy, fraud, identity theft, and attempting to influence witnesses.

Her birthday had been the final celebration of the life she controlled.

The leftover cake remained in our kitchen for days because the house was sealed as evidence.

Eventually, a crime-scene technician placed it in a trash bag.

Blue frosting.

White fondant.

Sixty-five gold sugar beads.
