Chapter 9 - THE MESSAGE FROM LUCÍA

Three years after the dinner, Elena helped me clean the condo.
Really clean.
Not housekeeping.
History.
Boxes.
Lucía's room.
I was finally ready.
Inside an old tablet, we found videos.
Lucía at nine.
Ten.
Eleven.
Nothing dramatic.
Dance practice.
Bad jokes.
Me yelling from another room.
Alejandro laughing.
A real family.
Not all false.
That mattered.
Then one video.
Lucía filmed me sleeping at the kitchen table after a twenty-hour hospital shift.
Her little voice whispered:
“My mom saves people but she sleeps like a dead bear.”
I laughed.
Then she moved closer to the camera.
“When I grow up, I'm never working this much.”
Elena and I cried laughing.
At the end, Lucía whispered:
“But she's really good.”
I stopped the video.
For seven years, I thought returning to medicine would somehow betray my daughter.
But Lucía had known me as a doctor.
Not only as Mom.
She hadn't needed one identity to erase the other.
I had.
Then Alejandro had exploited the fracture.
I finally understood something.
He had not stolen seven years from me.
Grief took some.
Fear took some.
I chose some.
Alejandro manipulated some.
Precision mattered.
If I gave him all seven years, I made him more powerful than he had actually been.
May you like
I refused.
