Chapter 8 - DR. TORRES RETURNS, DIFFERENTLY

It took nineteen months.

Assessments.

Simulation.

Updated certifications.

Supervised clinical observation.

Technical skills review.

Psychological evaluation.

More education than I thought possible.

At fifty, I returned to St. Catherine's.

Not as chief trauma surgeon.

That woman belonged to another era of my life.

I entered a trauma-systems and surgical simulation role, combining clinical supervision, protocol design and limited carefully supervised return to procedures.

Some people called that less.

I didn't.

It was mine.

The first time I entered an operating room again, I thought of Lucía.

I expected collapse.

Instead, I felt sad.

And focused.

Both.

Grief and competence can occupy the same body.

Nobody had told me.

Months later, Daniel rotated through trauma.

He saw me wearing scrubs.

Stopped dramatically.

“You're back.”

“Don't make it weird.”

“Impossible.”

I pointed toward the prep area.

“Gloves.”

“Yes, Dr. Torres.”

His grin nearly ruined my day.

In a good way.

Sergio eventually received a different general manager.

Not Alejandro.

He never apologized for that.

Didn't need to.

My career had not been a weapon against my husband.

His own conduct had consequences.

Important distinction.
