Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT HE ASKED ME TO LIE

Daniel came to the house on a Wednesday evening.
We had agreed he could collect some belongings.
Rachel was with me.
He looked at her.
“Can we have a minute alone?”
I shook my head.
“Rachel's staying.”
His jaw tightened.
Then he nodded.
We sat in the dining room.
Daniel folded his hands.
“Amelia, I need your help.”
I stared.
“With what?”
He swallowed.
“The investigators are asking about Carter Family Holdings.”
My stomach tightened.
“And?”
“They may contact you.”
“Okay.”
He leaned forward.
“If they do, I need you to say you knew about the company.”
Silence.
Rachel went still.
I stared at him.
“What?”
Daniel's voice shook.
“Just that we discussed it. That you were aware.”
I felt something inside me break cleanly.
“You want me to lie.”
“No. I just—”
“You want me to say something that isn't true.”
He looked down.
“Amelia, I could lose everything.”
I stared.
“You already lost me.”
He flinched.
I continued.
“And now you're asking me to risk my future to protect yours.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“I don't know what to do.”
I stood.
“Tell the truth.”
He looked up.
I pointed toward the door.
“Get your things and leave.”

After he was gone, Rachel hugged me.
I didn't cry.
I felt strangely calm.
Daniel had finally shown me the boundary he was willing to cross.
Not just infidelity.
Not just secrecy.
He wanted me to become part of his deception.
And for the first time, I knew exactly what I had to do.

The next morning, Margaret filed the divorce paperwork.
I signed the documents with steady hands.
Then went to work.
I helped a six-year-old boy practice buttoning his coat.
I met with a family whose daughter was learning to manage sensory overload.
I laughed with a coworker over terrible vending-machine coffee.

And somewhere in the middle of an ordinary Thursday, I realized my life had continued.
Even after my marriage ended.
