Chapter 14 - THE QUESTION I NEVER EXPECTED

Thomas proposed two years after we met.

Not at a restaurant.

Not on vacation.

At home.

On a Sunday morning.

I was wearing pajamas.

My hair was messy.

We were making pancakes.

Sophie was visiting for the weekend.

She sat at the kitchen counter pretending not to watch us.

Thomas turned off the stove.

Then looked at me.

“Amelia?”

I smiled.

“Yes?”

“I have a question.”

I laughed.

“Should I be worried?”

“Possibly.”

He reached into his pocket.

My heart stopped.

Sophie grinned.

Thomas opened a small velvet box.

Inside was a simple ring.

Beautiful.

Understated.

Exactly my style.

He looked at me.

“I know you've worked hard to build a life that belongs to you.”

My eyes filled.

“I don't want to take any part of that away.”

He took my hand.

“I want to build something beside it.”

I began crying.

He smiled nervously.

“Would you marry me?”

I stared.

Then laughed through tears.

“Yes.”

Sophie cheered.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Then kissed me.

Later, I told him I wanted a prenuptial agreement.

He nodded.

“Okay.”

I stared.

“That's it?”

He smiled.

“Amelia, I love you. I don't need to prove it by making financial decisions complicated.”

I laughed.

Then hugged him.

May you like

For the first time, marriage didn't feel like surrender.

It felt like a choice.
