Chapter 2 - The Documents in the Leather Bag

Andrew did not look at his wife with anger; he looked at her with the crushing, hollow fatigue of a man whose world had just fractured into dust.

“Andrew, honey, please get back into bed,” Brenda stammered, her high-pitched aggression evaporating into desperate pleading. “She’s trying to poison your mind! She’s crazy! Mark and I are just working on an off-the-books land development portfolio!”

“Shut up, Brenda,” Andrew said quietly.

He hobbled over to the rolling bedside table in Room 314, opened his canvas duffel bag, and pulled out a thick leather binder stuffed with stamped bank reconciliations and notarized shell company filings.

He handed the entire binder directly to me.

“She dropped this when she was packing her designer luggage to leave for Miami this morning,” Andrew said, his voice trembling. “She told me she was going on a corporate retreat. But these aren't retreat schedules, Mrs. Laura.”

I opened the first section of the binder.

My breath caught in my throat.

Spread across thirty pages were monthly wire transfers originating from Crestview Developments’ primary operating escrow account into an offshore entity named Lumina Horizon Holdings LLC, registered in Belize.

The authorized signatory for Crestview on every single transfer was Mark Sterling.

The sole beneficial owner and debit cardholder of Lumina Horizon Holdings was Brenda Davis.

Over fourteen months, Mark had systematically bled $8.4 million out of our commercial accounts directly into Brenda’s offshore vaults.

“You see page fourteen?” Andrew asked, pointing a trembling finger. “That’s a deed transfer application for the Oakridge commercial plaza. Mark signed over a forty percent equity share to Brenda last Friday.”

I looked at Brenda, who stood frozen near the doorframe, her painted nails digging into the strap of her handbag until her knuckles turned white.

“You’ve been busy, Brenda,” I said, closing the binder with a firm, resounding thud.

“You can’t prove anything!” Brenda hissed, backing into the corridor. “Mark runs that company! He has full power of attorney! By the time you get a court date, the money will already be converted into untraceable private equity in Zurich!”

“We’ll see about that,” I said calmly.
