Chapter 9 - THE LAST VIDEO

Five years after the chili incident, Melissa called.
Brandon’s old phone had remained in evidence and archival storage connected to the closed portions of his case.
A final copied video had recently surfaced while records were being organized for a civil insurance matter.
She asked if I wanted to know what was in it.
“No.”
Then:
“Is Lucy in it?”
“No.”
“Then tell me.”
Brandon was alone.
Sitting in his car.
The recording was dated two weeks before the incident.
He looked tired.
Not laughing.
He said:
“Claire is going to leave.”
Pause.
“I can tell.”
Then:
“I keep pushing harder because every time she pulls away, I feel like I’m losing control.”
Another pause.
“I know what I’m doing scares Lucy.”
My stomach turned.
Then the final sentence:
“Sometimes I think if I scare them enough, they’ll stop trying to leave.”
I sat in silence.
There it was.
No prank.
No misunderstanding.
Not even self-deception.
He knew.
Maybe not the full damage.
Maybe not what his behavior would become.
But he knew fear was the mechanism.
For years, I had wondered whether he believed his own excuses.
That video answered enough.
I did not show it to Lucy.
She was thirteen.
It did not belong in her nervous system.
I gave it to my attorney where appropriate.
Then went home.
Lucy was in the kitchen making cupcakes with Rachel.
Flour everywhere.
Music too loud.
She held up a spoon.
“Taste.”
I did.
“Too sweet.”
She looked offended.
“That is not a thing.”
Rachel nodded.
“Correct.”
I laughed.

The video stayed closed.
The life in front of me mattered more.
