Chapter 5 - BRANDON’S MOTHER BLAMED ME

My mother-in-law, Evelyn Hale, called after six weeks of silence.

I almost ignored it.

Then curiosity won.

“Claire?”

My name was Claire Hale then.

Soon to be Claire Morgan again.

“Yes.”

“You’ve destroyed Brandon.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Not:

How is Lucy?

“You know there are criminal charges.”

“Yes.”

“He could lose his career.”

“Yes.”

“He could lose his daughter.”

“He made choices.”

“He made mistakes.”

I gripped the phone.

“No.”

“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.”

“This happened for a year.”

She started crying.

“You always hated his sense of humor.”

That sentence explained more than she knew.

Evelyn had laughed too.

Not at the worst incidents.

But enough.

At Christmas, Brandon wrapped an empty box for Lucy and pretended her actual gift had been returned because she misbehaved.

Lucy cried.

Evelyn laughed.

“Your daddy is terrible!”

Then gave Lucy another present.

Everyone moved on.

The pattern had an audience before it had consequences.

I asked:

“Did Brandon scare you when he was young?”

Silence.

“What?”

“Did he do things like this growing up?”

“He was mischievous.”

“How?”

“Claire—”

“How?”

Finally:

“He once locked his cousin in a shed.”

Another time, he put hot sauce into his younger brother’s cereal.

Everyone called him wild.

Funny.

A handful.

Nobody taught him that another person’s panic was not entertainment.

That did not excuse adulthood.

Plenty of obnoxious children become decent adults.

But it explained the family language.

Prank.

Joke.

Lesson.

Never cruelty.

Then Evelyn said:

“Please drop this.”

I actually laughed.

“I don’t control the criminal case.”

“You can tell them you exaggerated.”

“No.”

“For your family.”

“My family is Lucy.”

Silence.

That sentence ended something.

May you like

Not just the call.

My willingness to let marriage redefine who counted as family.
