Chapter 7 - THE WAREHOUSE ON KING STREET

Lucian wanted to send men.

I said no.

He stared at me.

“Elena.”

“If armed men storm the building, Vanessa becomes leverage.”

“She already is.”

“Then we reduce the number of people making unpredictable decisions.”

He hated that.

Rachel contacted federal investigators who had already opened a preliminary financial inquiry based on our evidence.

Police tactical units were alerted discreetly.

Lucian remained unconvinced.

“What if they move her?”

“Then surveillance follows.”

“What if Adrian hurts her?”

“I don’t think he will.”

“You trusted him enough to marry him.”

Fair.

I flinched.

Lucian regretted it immediately.

“Sorry.”

“Accurate.”

Adrian called.

“I want Elena alone.”

Lucian answered:

“No.”

I took the phone.

“Yes.”

He stared at me.

“No.”

I covered the microphone.

“My decision.”

He looked furious.

Then forced himself to step back.

That was harder for him than violence.

I agreed to meet Adrian outside the old Vale warehouse.

But not alone in the way he thought.

Wire.

Tracker.

Investigators nearby.

Lucian half a block away.

I entered.

Vanessa sat near the center.

Hands tied.

Adrian stood beside her.

Camille stood farther back.

Perfect coat.

Perfect hair.

Even now.

“Elena.”

“Let her go.”

Camille smiled.

“You always did skip pleasantries.”

“Wedding cured me.”

Adrian looked exhausted.

“Mom, this has gone too far.”

Camille ignored him.

She placed papers on a table.

Recantation.

I read.

I had falsified audit findings.

Copied records illegally.

Attempted to extort the Vale family after Adrian ended our relationship.

Everything they needed.

“Sign.”

“No.”

Camille sighed.

“You really have become difficult.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You just ran out of control.”

Her expression changed.

“Lucian Moretti cannot save you.”

“I didn’t ask him to.”

“He’s outside.”

My stomach tightened.

She knew.

Camille smiled.

“Of course he is.”

Then I saw Adrian’s face.

He hadn’t known.

Camille had built another trap.

Men emerged from side rooms.

Armed.

Not Vale security.

Hired contractors.

Her plan was larger.

Provoke Lucian into entering armed.

Create a violent confrontation.

Destroy both threats at once.

I whispered:

“Adrian, she’s using you too.”

“Stop.”

“She knew Lucian would come.”

“Stop.”

“She didn’t tell you.”

His face changed.

Camille snapped:

“Enough.”

Vanessa shouted:

“Adrian, look at her!”

One of the gunmen grabbed Vanessa.

Adrian moved.

“Don’t touch her.”

Camille’s eyes hardened.

“Finally.”

She almost sounded disgusted.

“You have always been too soft.”

That broke something in him.

Adrian turned.

“Soft?”

“You were supposed to control Elena.”

“I did.”

“No.”

Camille’s voice became sharp.

“You fell in love.”

Silence.

“You questioned destroying her firm.”

Adrian went pale.

“You kept copies of messages with Vanessa.”

Camille continued.

“You created every weakness now threatening this family.”

Adrian looked at me.

Then Vanessa.

Then his mother.

For the first time, he saw the architecture around him.

Camille said:

“Sign, Elena.”

“No.”

One gunman moved closer.

Then lights went out.

Not Lucian.

Police.

Tactical team entered from the rear loading bay.

Shouts.

Movement.

A gun fired into the ceiling.

Vanessa screamed.

I dropped.

Adrian covered her.

Camille ran.

Lucian entered despite every instruction I had given.

Of course.

One gunman aimed toward me.

Lucian hit him before he could fire.

Controlled.

Fast.

The weapon slid away.

Another charged.

Lucian knocked him into a crate.

No shooting.

Then Adrian stood.

Gun in hand.

I didn’t know where he got it.

He pointed at Lucian.

Everything stopped.

Lucian faced him.

“Put it down.”

Adrian laughed wildly.

“You took everything.”

“No.”

Lucian’s voice was calm.

“You lost her before I arrived.”

Adrian’s hand shook.

He looked toward me.

“Elena.”

I said:

“Put it down.”

“You chose him.”

“I chose me.”

His face broke.

Police shouted.

Adrian lowered the gun.

Then Camille appeared near the loading door with another pistol.

Aimed at me.

Lucian drew.

Fast.

Too fast.

Both weapons raised.

I shouted:

“No!”

Lucian froze.

One second.

Enough for an officer to tackle Camille from the side.

Her gun slid across concrete.

Lucian still had his weapon aimed.

He could have fired.

He didn’t.

He lowered it.

Looked at me.

I nodded.

That moment mattered more than everything he had promised.

May you like

Because when anger became action, Lucian chose differently.
