Chapter 1 - THEN SHE’S MINE

My groom looked me straight in the eyes at the altar and said:

“I can’t marry you. I never loved you.”

Three hundred people heard him.

The church went silent first.

Then came the whispers.

Sharp.

Hungry.

Almost relieved that someone else’s life had just become more interesting than theirs.

My fingers tightened around my bouquet until several white roses bent beneath my grip.

Across from me, Adrian Vale stood in a black tuxedo, handsome and polished and completely empty.

I had loved that face for two years.

That morning I wanted to forget it.

“Elena,” he said.

I waited.

Maybe some broken part of me expected an explanation.

An apology.

Anything human.

Instead he continued:

“I should have ended this months ago.”

A camera clicked somewhere behind me.

I heard it.

Adrian heard it too.

That was when I understood.

This was not a private act of cowardice.

It was a performance.

His mother, Camille Vale, sat in the front row.

Perfect silver dress.

Perfect posture.

And a tiny smile.

Then I saw Vanessa.

Second row.

Red dress.

Adrian’s ex-girlfriend.

The woman he called an “unfinished chapter” when we first met.

One hand rested across her stomach.

The other dabbed theatrically beneath one eye.

My stomach dropped.

Adrian turned toward the congregation.

“I apologize for the inconvenience.”

Inconvenience.

“But I won’t ruin my life out of pity.”

Pity.

That one nearly knocked me backward.

My father had died the previous year.

My accounting firm had lost nearly half its clients in six months.

My apartment lease had mysteriously become dependent on a company Adrian controlled.

Every piece of stability I once possessed had slowly begun orbiting the Vale family.

And now I understood that none of it was accidental.

Camille stood.

She walked toward me.

Touched my veil between two fingers.

“Be graceful, dear.”

I stared at her.

“Leave quietly.”

Something inside me became very still.

“Was this always the plan?”

Adrian smiled.

Not kindly.

“You were useful.”

A laugh came from one of the rear pews.

My face burned.

But I did not cry.

Because Adrian had forgotten something.

Before I was his fiancée, I had been Elena Mercer.

Forensic accountant.

Small firm.

Bad office coffee.

Excellent conviction rate when fraud cases reached litigation.

Two years earlier, Vale Family Foundation hired me to perform an independent financial review after several donors questioned discrepancies.

That was how I met Adrian.

He brought coffee into my temporary audit office.

Made jokes.

Invited me to dinner.

Introduced me to his mother.

Then somehow became the center of my life.

And throughout those two years, I kept working.

Quietly.

Invoices.

Donor receipts.

Charitable grants.

Overseas transfers.

Shipping companies.

Consulting retainers.

Money moved through the Vale Foundation in patterns that made no legitimate sense.

The deeper I looked, the worse it became.

Ghost charities.

Invoices for medical equipment that never arrived.

Six-figure donations routed through shell entities.

Last night, less than twelve hours before my wedding, I finally put the structure together.

Adrian had not fallen in love with the accountant auditing his family.

He had been assigned to her.

I knew too much.

And now he needed the world to believe anything I said next came from a humiliated woman seeking revenge.

Then a cold voice cut through the church.

“Then she’s mine.”

Everything stopped.

I turned.

Lucian Moretti rose from the front row.

I knew who he was.

Everyone did.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Charcoal-gray suit.

No tie.

No visible security, though I knew at least four men inside that church belonged to him.

Publicly, Lucian controlled Moretti Maritime, commercial real estate, private security and several luxury hotels.

Privately?

People lowered their voices when saying his name.

The most feared man in the city walked into the aisle.

Adrian went pale.

Camille’s smile disappeared.

Lucian stopped in front of me.

Then held out his hand.

I stared at it.

“What are you doing?”

“Preventing you from making the second-worst decision of your life.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“What was the worst?”

“Showing up today.”

Adrian stepped down from the altar.

“Moretti.”

Lucian did not look at him.

His hand remained extended.

“Elena.”

I whispered:

“I don’t belong to you.”

His eyes finally met mine.

“I know.”

Then, quietly enough that only I could hear:

“I said it because men like Adrian understand ownership better than consent.”

That surprised me.

He leaned slightly closer.

“Smile.”

“Why?”

“Because every camera in this church is recording his family’s first mistake.”

I looked at Adrian.

Then Camille.

Then Vanessa.

Lucian whispered:

“Their nightmare just started.”

I placed my hand in his.

The church erupted.

I walked down the aisle beside Charleston’s most dangerous man while my abandoned groom stared after us.

Outside, cameras exploded with flashes.

Reporters shouted.

“Elena!”

“Mr. Moretti!”

“Are you together?”

“Was this planned?”

Lucian’s hand remained lightly at my back.

Not gripping.

Guiding.

A black sedan waited.

He opened the door.

I stopped.

“I’m not getting kidnapped on my wedding day.”

One corner of his mouth moved.

“Good.”

“What?”

“Still thinking.”

“Why are you here?”

His amusement disappeared.

“Get in.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

Then nodded toward the church.

“Because Adrian Vale filed a criminal complaint against you at 8:12 this morning.”

My blood went cold.

“What?”

“He claims you manipulated Vale Foundation records and attempted to extort his family.”

I stopped breathing.

Lucian continued:

“And because one of the charitable funds they stole from belonged to me.”

That changed everything.

May you like

I got into the car.
