Chapter 6 - LORRAINE’S SIGNATURE

The audit uncovered another surprise.

Lorraine had known about Caldwell’s infertility.

Not from him.

She found the specialist invoice years earlier.

Then accessed a mailed insurance explanation.

She confronted him privately.

He begged her to keep silent.

She agreed.

Then spent five years blaming me anyway.

When I learned, I asked to see her.

Thaddius objected.

“Why?”

“I want to hear her say it.”

Lorraine arrived furious.

Then realized what document sat on the table.

Her face changed.

“You read his mail?”

“I was worried.”

“And then you knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew your son’s diagnosis.”

Silence.

“And you still called me barren.”

Her jaw tightened.

“I was protecting him.”

That sentence made me laugh.

Actually laugh.

“What?”

“You humiliated me to protect him?”

“He was already devastated.”

“So I became the designated failure?”

“You were stronger.”

There.

A familiar injustice.

Strong people become convenient containers for everyone else’s pain.

“I thought you could handle it.”

I stood.

“No.”

Lorraine stared.

“You thought I would stay quiet.”

Different thing.

She looked away.

Then:

“I wanted grandchildren.”

“I know.”

“I wanted the Vance name continued.”

“The company is not a monarchy.”

“It was to us.”

That explained more than she realized.

Sloan’s pregnancy had felt like salvation.

An heir.

A continuation.

Lorraine knew Caldwell’s natural conception odds were extraordinarily low.

Yet she chose not to question.

Why?

Because Sloan’s story gave her what she wanted.

She preferred a convenient lie.

Same disease as Caldwell.

Same disease as me, in another form.

We all had ignored facts that threatened the story we needed.

Lorraine eventually apologized.

Poorly.

Then better.

I accepted that she regretted it.

I did not restore access.

She moved to her Park Avenue condominium.

She told friends I had evicted her.

I stopped correcting every story.

Peace sometimes requires allowing people to misunderstand you from a safe distance.
