Chapter 8 - THE CASE AGAINST THEM

The criminal case was not one giant prosecution where every family grievance became a charge.

The New Year’s assault was one matter.

The financial documents were another.

Charles faced consequences for intentionally burning me.

Brian faced consequences related to restraining me and his role in the incident.

The exact charging decisions evolved as evidence was reviewed.

Lauren’s conduct regarding the drive became part of a separate inquiry into whether records were intentionally removed or concealed.

Patricia cooperated.

That mattered.

So did the photographs.

Hospital documentation.

Burn assessment.

Pregnancy monitoring.

911 call.

Hallway audio.

Witness statements.

And, eventually, Lauren’s own phone.

She had recorded part of dinner.

Not to help me.

She liked posting private family clips to a group chat.

One short video captured the minutes before the assault.

Charles pushing documents toward me.

Me saying:

“I am not guaranteeing another dollar without independent review.”

Charles:

“You think your money makes you smarter than us?”

Me:

“No. I think my name makes me responsible for what I sign.”

Then Brian:

“Valerie, just do it. We talked about this.”

I answered:

“No, you talked. I said I’d review it.”

Charles stood.

Video ended there.

That recording destroyed the family’s early suggestion that the violence followed some unrelated emotional argument.

It showed exactly what triggered Charles.

I refused financial access.

He responded with domination.

The cigarette was not random anger.

May you like

It was punishment for saying no.
