Chapter 5 - WHY BRIAN MARRIED ME

I hated myself for asking the question.

But once financial records opened, I could not stop.

Did Brian love me?

Or did he love the access?

We met six years earlier at a technology conference.

He was charming.

Funny.

Patient.

He worked in commercial real-estate acquisitions.

I was already financially successful.

He knew I owned the penthouse.

He knew about my stock options.

He knew I had money.

But the first two years felt real.

At least to me.

Then his father’s business began struggling.

Charles had leveraged several properties before interest rates rose.

Two development deals underperformed.

A lawsuit consumed cash.

Suddenly, Brian became interested in combining finances.

Not fully.

Strategically.

He asked me to cover renovations.

Then family travel.

Then temporary loans.

Then “emergency” support.

I always had more liquidity.

He always had an explanation.

Naomi found a text from Charles to Brian dated seven months before our wedding.

Make sure she understands family obligations before you marry her.

Brian replied:

She does. She’s generous.

Another message, three months later:

Don’t push too fast. Once you’re married, it’ll be easier.

I put the phone down.

Naomi asked:

“Do you need a break?”

“No.”

I didn’t.

Not yet.

I needed the whole truth.

Then:

Charles: Penthouse ever going into joint title?

Brian: Working on it.

My baby moved.

I placed one hand over my stomach.

Brian had asked me three times to add him to the deed.

I always refused.

Not because I expected divorce.

Because my aunt, who taught me financial independence, once told me:

Never confuse love with paperwork. Sign what makes sense, not what proves affection.

That advice had saved the most valuable asset I owned.

But it had not saved me from everything else.

The messages did not prove Brian married me solely for money.

Human motives are rarely that clean.

Maybe he loved me.

Maybe he also saw financial opportunity.

Those truths can coexist.

May you like

That somehow hurt more.
