Chapter 8 - GRACE WALKED OUT OF MY HOUSE

Four years after Isabelle’s murder, Grace resigned.

I refused to accept it.

“You can’t refuse.”

“I just did.”

“You understand employment law surprisingly badly.”

I stared at the letter.

Graduate program.

Child trauma counseling.

Of course.

“You’re leaving the girls.”

Her expression changed.

“That is unfair.”

I immediately regretted it.

“Sorry.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then:

“I’m not disappearing.”

She didn’t.

Sunday dinner.

Birthdays.

School plays.

Emergency calls.

But she stopped being my employee.

That mattered for what happened later.

Two years after she left the household staff, I asked her to dinner.

A date.

She laughed for almost thirty seconds.

Not the response I wanted.

“You terrified?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Our first date was terrible.

I chose a private room at an expensive restaurant.

Grace said:

“This feels like a deposition with risotto.”

Second date:

pizza.

Perfect.

We moved slowly.

Very slowly.

Olivia approved first.

Sophie pretended not to care.

Nora asked:

“If you marry Grace, can she still burn pancakes?”

Apparently that was the defining issue.

Grace and I married three years later.

No empire wedding.

No hundreds of guests.

Thirty-one people.

Isabelle’s photograph near the garden.

Not because Grace replaced her.

Because she didn’t.

There was room for both truths.

My daughters had a mother who died.

And a woman who later loved them.

Nobody needed to erase anyone.
