Chapter 2 - THE ROOM UNDER THE KITCHEN

Firefighters found the entrance twenty minutes later.
It was not actually a sewer.
The metal grate opened into an old ventilation channel connected to a basement service tunnel built when the house still had a coal furnace and cold-storage rooms.
The original plans showed an underground chamber beneath the kitchen.
I had never known it existed.
Neither had the contractor who renovated our house.
Someone else did.
Monica.
Behind shelving inside a locked utility room, firefighters found an old steel door.
A newer deadbolt had been added.
From the outside.
That detail mattered.
When they opened it, the smell reached us first.
Damp concrete.
Stale air.
Then Lily.
She was curled beneath an old wool blanket.
Thirty-one years old.
Normally stubborn, loud, energetic.
Now terrifyingly thin.
A plastic water container sat nearby.
Several food wrappers.
A bucket in the corner.
No bed.
No window.
Eva’s pieces of bread lay beneath the ventilation shaft.
Lily looked toward me.
“Will?”
I nearly fell.
Paramedics stopped me from rushing in while they assessed her.
She was dehydrated.
Weak.
Bruised.
But alive.
One paramedic asked:
“How long?”
Lily whispered:
“Twenty-three days.”
Exactly how long she had been missing.
I looked at Monica.
Two officers stood beside her now.
She was crying.
“I brought her food.”
My head snapped toward her.
“You knew.”
“I didn’t want her dead!”
Lily made a bitter sound from the floor.
“Generous.”
Monica covered her face.
An officer asked:
“Who locked her inside?”
Silence.
Then Lily looked at my wife.
“Monica.”
My marriage ended inside me before anyone said another word.
But the question that followed was worse.
“Why?”
Lily looked at me.
Fear appeared in her face.
Not fear of Monica.
Fear of what she was about to tell me.
“Because I found the documents.”
“What documents?”
Monica suddenly shouted:
“Don’t!”
Every officer in the room looked at her.
Too late.
Lily closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Mom’s trust.”
Our mother, Eleanor Carter, had died seven years earlier.
She left behind minority interests in Carter Industrial Supply, two warehouse properties, investment accounts, and a family trust.
I managed most of the operating company.
Lily controlled several protected trust rights.
And a separate trust had been created for Eva.
I knew all of that.
Or thought I did.
“What about Mom’s trust?”
Lily stared directly at Monica.
“She forged my signature.”
The room went silent.
“On what?”
“A property transfer.”
I felt my pulse in my throat.
“Which property?”
Lily answered:
“Riverside Logistics Park.”
My largest distribution property.
Current value:
Nearly $26 million.
I stared at my wife.
Monica whispered:
“William…”
Lily continued.
“She and Dean were moving it.”
Dean Shaw.
Monica’s older brother.
A real-estate developer who had spent most of the previous decade failing upward with other people’s money.
“What do you mean moving it?”
“Into one of Dean’s companies.”
I shook my head.
“That isn’t possible.”
Riverside was held through the Carter family structure.
Any transfer required:
My approval.
Lily’s trust consent.
And independent trustee confirmation because Eva held a future beneficial interest.
I had approved nothing.
Lily gave a weak smile.
“That’s why they needed my signature.”
My stomach turned.
“And you refused.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I never even saw the document.”
Then I understood.
“Forged.”
She nodded.
“I found it afterward.”
Monica began sobbing.
The officer quietly asked her to stop speaking until counsel was present.
Good advice.
She ignored it.
“I was going to fix it.”
I stared.
“You imprisoned my sister.”
“I panicked!”
“For twenty-three days?”
“I didn’t know what else to do!”
Lily laughed weakly.
“There was always the option where you opened the door.”
Monica closed her mouth.
Paramedics lifted Lily onto a stretcher.
As they carried her toward the ambulance, she caught my wrist.
“Will.”
“I’m here.”
“There’s more.”
Of course there was.
“What?”
“Dean wasn’t trying to steal Riverside.”
I frowned.
May you like
“He was trying to hide what was already underneath it.”
