Chapter 8 - MY FATHER FINALLY SAID THE WORD

Dad eventually entered a negotiated plea on several charges.
Other allegations were dismissed or resolved separately.
Susan reached her own agreement after cooperation.
Neither walked away untouched.
Neither disappeared into prison forever either.
Dad served a substantial custodial sentence followed by supervision and restitution obligations.
Susan received a lesser sentence shaped partly by her cooperation, though the court made clear cooperation did not erase participation.
People online later complained the punishment was too light.
Others said too harsh.
I stopped reading.
My life was not a comment section.
Before sentencing, Dad requested permission to write me a letter.
He could have written anyway.
But perhaps someone had finally taught him that access was not automatic.
I agreed to receive it.
The first page was mostly excuses.
Stress.
Business failure.
Fear.
Grandma “provoking conflict.”
Susan “pushing ideas.”
I nearly stopped.
Then page three changed.
I stole from you.
I stared at the sentence.
Not borrowed.
Not shared.
Not family money.
Stole.
I stole your tuition because I thought I could replace it before anyone knew.
I lied when I couldn’t.
I let you believe struggling made you stronger because admitting I caused part of the struggle would have made me ashamed.
I kept reading.
I stole from my mother because I had already crossed the line once and the second time felt easier.
Then:
The worst thing is not that I wanted your trust. The worst thing is that I had already decided what your money should do for me before I ever asked what you wanted your life to become.
I cried.
Not because the apology repaired everything.
It didn’t.
Because truth finally arrived without me having to drag it behind a police report.
The final sentence:
I don’t expect forgiveness. I am trying to become someone who understands why I am not owed it.
I folded the letter.
Put it in a drawer.
Not framed.
May you like
Not destroyed.
Some things belong somewhere between forgiveness and fire.
