Chapter 8 - JASON STARTED OVER

Two years after the lawn incident, Jason got a job at a small legal-aid nonprofit.

Half his old salary.

No private office.

He loved it.

That surprised everyone except him.

He handled housing disputes, wage claims, and consumer cases.

Then he combined architecture interests with law and began working on zoning and tenant-habitability cases.

For once, his career looked like something he chose.

Dad hated the salary.

Jason no longer cared.

That was growth.

One Thanksgiving, we all returned home.

First time together in two years.

Mrs. Hill still lived next door.

Still watched everything.

Dad tried hard.

Too hard at first.

He complimented my company three times.

Jason’s work twice.

Then stopped himself.

“I’m doing it again.”

Mom smiled.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Evaluating.”

Dad looked annoyed.

Then laughed.

That was new.

Dinner was awkward.

Then better.

At dessert, Dad stood.

Jason and I both groaned.

“No speeches,” I said.

“I know.”

Dad sat back down.

Everyone laughed.

Progress again.

Later, he found me on the porch.

“You still have that video?”

“Yes.”

“Do you watch it?”

“No.”

“Why keep it?”

I thought.

“Because it reminds me I wasn’t imagining how bad that day felt.”

He nodded.

Then:

“I’m sorry you needed proof.”

That was probably the best apology he ever gave me.

Not:

Delete it.

Not:

You made me look bad.

Just:

I’m sorry you needed proof.

May you like

I believed him.
