Chapter 5 - THE LAWSUIT THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Graystone surprised everyone.

They returned the files.

Confirmed internal deletion.

Agreed to an independent forensic review showing the materials had not been incorporated into development work.

Why?

Because their general counsel had no interest in building a multimillion-dollar lawsuit around stolen information.

Smart.

Northstar accepted the remediation.

No lawsuit.

No dramatic courtroom battle.

Jason’s firm still had its own problem.

A lawyer had used firm systems and client relationships to move confidential third-party material.

After investigation, Bennett, Shaw & Cole terminated him.

Not disbarred.

Not arrested.

Fired.

The firm reported the matter appropriately.

Jason hired ethics counsel.

Ultimately, after review by the relevant professional authorities, he faced disciplinary consequences short of losing his license permanently.

That disappointed people who heard the story later.

They wanted spectacular punishment.

Real accountability is often less theatrical.

Jason lost his job.

His bonus.

His partnership track.

His reputation inside a small professional world.

That was plenty.

When he told Dad, Dad said:

“You threw away everything.”

Jason replied:

“No. I threw away the version of everything you liked.”

Then he moved out of Dad’s house.

At thirty.

For the first time.

He rented a one-bedroom apartment.

Started therapy.

Took contract legal work.

Nothing prestigious.

Nothing framed.

He also enrolled in an evening architectural drafting course.

When he told me, I laughed.

“Seriously?”

“Do not tell Dad.”

“I thought we were done living around Dad.”

“Excellent point.”

May you like

That became our joke.
