Chapter 1 - GOODBYE, LOSER

"""My brother threw me out of his wedding in front of twenty relatives after I paid more than $100,000 for it.
His text said, """"You’re not invited. Goodbye, loser.""""
Then my father liked the message.
They thought I would swallow the humiliation because my name was only useful when it appeared on a check.
They had forgotten my name was also on every contract.
I was sitting on the forty-second floor of my company’s headquarters when Julian’s message appeared. Around me, senior executives were discussing a promotion I desperately needed, partly because my bank accounts were being drained by his wedding.
Cedar Grove Estate. Imported flowers. A live band. Crystal rentals. A celebrity photographer. A five-tier cake.
Julian wanted a wedding that looked like inherited wealth, even though his credit cards were maxed out and his loans were in default.
Our parents claimed their money was tied up. His fiancée, Chloe, said her trust fund could not be accessed until after the ceremony.
So they came to me.
""""Family helps family,"""" Mom had said.
""""You’re single,"""" Dad added. """"What else are you saving for?""""
I signed the venue agreement. I covered the catering deposit. I paid the florist when Julian’s card was declined. Every time a vendor threatened to walk away, I stepped in.
The total had reached $110,000.
And now the groom was calling me a loser in the family group chat.
My aunt added a laughing reaction. A cousin posted a champagne emoji. Nobody asked why the man financing the wedding had suddenly been banned from it.
My supervisor was speaking when Dad’s thumbs-up appeared beneath Julian’s message.
That tiny symbol hurt more than the insult.
My father had spent my entire childhood lecturing me about loyalty and dignity. Yet with one tap, he publicly approved of his younger son humiliating me.
I did not leave the boardroom.
I did not argue.

I typed one word.
""""Fine.""""
