Chapter 8 - WHAT NIKOLAI BURIED

Nikolai spent the next forty-eight hours reconstructing a decision he had made eleven years earlier.

The signature was genuine.

That was the first problem.

He had signed a redevelopment authorization involving the Queens property.

But not the inspection report Elena possessed.

Someone had transferred his signature onto another document.

His attorney confirmed the alteration.

The ink and printing were inconsistent.

The metadata from an archived electronic copy showed the signature image had been inserted later.

But Nikolai knew evidence of forgery wasn't enough.

He needed to explain why his name appeared in the transaction at all.

And that meant telling Elena something he had concealed.

Eleven years earlier, Nikolai had known Richard Bellman was corrupt.

He had suspected fraudulent inspections.

He had also wanted the Queens redevelopment project.

So he ignored warning signs.

He told himself that buying the property and replacing the buildings would solve the safety problems.

It was convenient reasoning.

Profitable reasoning.

Cowardly reasoning.

Arthur Ashford died before Nikolai completed the purchase.

Nikolai had ordered a private investigation.

When it found inconsistencies, he handed the findings to his lawyers.

They advised silence.

He accepted it.

Then he bought the land anyway.

That was the truth.

He hadn't ordered Arthur's death.

But he had benefited from the system Arthur tried to expose.

Elena listened without interrupting.

They sat at the guesthouse kitchen table.

Nikolai had asked permission to come inside.

She had agreed because she wanted answers.

Not because she had forgiven him.

When he finished, she stared at the report.

"You could have helped my mother."

"Yes."

"You could have demanded another investigation."

"Yes."

"You could have refused to buy the land."

"Yes."

Her eyes filled.

"Then why didn't you?"

Nikolai looked down.

"Because I was ambitious. And I convinced myself the past couldn't be changed."

Elena wiped her face.

"My mother spent years wondering whether Dad had made a mistake."

"I'm sorry."

"She blamed herself for encouraging him to take that job."

Nikolai closed his eyes.

Elena stood.

"I need you to leave."

He rose immediately.

"All right."

At the door, she stopped him.

"Nikolai?"

He turned.

"If you want to help me, stop trying to make this about whether I trust you."

He nodded.

"You're right."

"Make the evidence public."

His expression changed.

"That could destroy my company."

"I know."

She looked directly at him.

"My father lost his life."

Nikolai said nothing.

Then he left.

***

The following morning, Nikolai's legal team delivered the original investigation files to state and federal authorities.

He also announced an independent review of every redevelopment project connected to Bellman Urban Holdings.

Investors panicked.

His board objected.

Three executives resigned.

Nikolai signed the authorization anyway.

Adrian Cole watched him.

"You understand what this could cost?"

"Yes."

"Why now?"

Nikolai looked toward the city.

"Because eleven years ago, I decided the truth was too expensive."

He paused.

"I was wrong."

***

Julian learned about the disclosure that afternoon.

Martin Bellman stormed into his office.

"Castellane opened everything."

Julian stood.

"What?"

"Every file. Every transaction."

"Can he prove anything?"

"Not yet."

Martin's face was pale.

"But Arthur Ashford kept records."

Julian stared.

"Where?"

Martin looked at him.

"Ask Elena."

Julian shook his head.

"She doesn't know."

"Then why did you spend three years living with her?"

The room went silent.

Julian understood.

He had never been asked to love Elena.

He had been asked to watch her.

May you like

And now the men who had arranged that surveillance were running out of time.
