Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN JULIAN COULDN’T SILENCE

Julian appeared on television Monday morning.
He wore a navy suit.
His hair was perfect.
His expression was wounded.
"My former girlfriend is being manipulated by Nikolai Castellane," he told a reporter.
Elena watched from Maya's office.
Julian continued.
"She's had emotional difficulties since her mother's death. I'm concerned for her safety."
Elena felt sick.
There it was.
The same strategy he'd used for years.
Make her sound unstable.
Make her sound confused.
Make every accusation look like a symptom.
Maya switched off the television.
"We don't have to respond publicly."
Elena stared at the blank screen.
"I know."
"You don't owe anyone your story."
"I know."
She looked at Maya.
"But I want to tell it."
Not because she needed strangers to believe her.
Because Julian had built his control around her silence.
Elena gave a recorded statement to investigators.
She documented the bruises.
The threats.
The financial control.
The messages.
The photograph taken while she slept.
She also provided the evidence connecting Julian to Bellman's payments.
Then she made one public statement through her attorney.
It was short.
She did not describe every humiliation.
She did not defend her intelligence.
She did not apologize for staying.
She said:
"I left a relationship in which I was threatened and controlled. I have provided evidence to the appropriate authorities. I ask that people respect the legal process and the privacy of those involved."
Julian's attorney called it defamatory.
Maya smiled.
"Then he can explain which sentence is false."

Nikolai watched the statement from his office.
Adrian stood beside him.
"She's stronger than you expected."
Nikolai shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Elena's photograph on the news.
"She was always strong."
Adrian studied him.
"You're in love with her."
Nikolai said nothing.
"That's a dangerous complication."
"I know."
"She's just escaped an abusive relationship."
"I know."
"Then give her time."
Nikolai looked toward the window.
"I intend to."

That evening Elena received a message from Nikolai.
I saw your statement. You were clear and brave. No need to reply.
She stared at it.
Then smiled.
It was the first message from a man in years that didn't demand an answer.
She put the phone away.
And continued living.
She applied for a job at a nonprofit housing organization.
She started therapy.
She reopened contact with her college roommate, Sophie.
Their first conversation was awkward.
Then Sophie cried.
"I thought you hated me."
Elena shook her head.
"I thought you were tired of me."
Sophie hugged her.
"I was worried about you."
For the first time, Elena began rebuilding a life Julian had spent years dismantling.
And that life did not revolve around Nikolai.
May you like
That was precisely why, when she eventually chose to see him again, the choice would mean something.
