Chapter 6 - MELISSA’S EMAIL

Melissa eventually cooperated.
Not immediately.
At first, she insisted she knew only that the pool contained “an old structural hazard.”
Then investigators recovered emails.
One from the pool renovation six years earlier.
Melissa to Richard:
If this is what your father warned you about, seal it and move on. We have children. Do not drag the family into something that happened before you were born.
Richard replied:
Agreed. Glenn asks too many questions. I’ll use North Shore for the west section.
Another:
Once the deck is poured nobody will have a reason to open it again.
Melissa had not known Eleanor’s full story.
But she knew there was a family secret beneath the pool.
And she participated in hiding the structure after it was discovered.
That made her refusal to pay Dad look different.
During his repairs, Dad had asked:
“Did you know there’s an older chamber beneath the west return?”
Melissa’s face had changed.
Dad noticed.
He documented that too.
She refused the invoice the next day.
Then threatened my job.
Not because $7,800 mattered.
Because Dad had found the one part of the property Richard and Melissa never wanted another contractor examining.
She hoped intimidation would send him away quietly.
Instead, she chose the worst possible person.
Dad had spent thirty years dealing with property owners who wanted shortcuts.
He trusted paperwork more than promises.
Every pipe he uncovered had a photograph.
Every change had a signature.
Every conversation about unexpected conditions had a written note.
Melissa mistook calm for weakness.

That was her mistake.
