Chapter 13 - THE EMPIRE THAT CHOSE TO SURVIVE

Bianchi Maritime survived.

Not easily.

Not without losses.

Aurelio sold several properties.

Negotiated new financing.

Reduced executive compensation.

And worked with independent auditors to rebuild the company's financial controls.

Some employees lost their jobs.

Others were transferred.

The recovery took years.

But the ships kept moving.

The docks remained open.

And the company began earning back the trust it had lost.

Aurelio also faced increasing scrutiny over the family's criminal past.

He chose to cooperate with lawful investigations and separate legitimate operations from illegal ones.

The process cost him influence.

Power.

And relationships.

But it gave him a future that was no longer built entirely on fear.

Meanwhile, I graduated with my accounting degree.

I accepted a position at an independent forensic accounting firm.

My first assignment involved a small nonprofit whose treasurer had been stealing donations.

The amount was modest compared with the Bianchi case.

But the victims were real.

Families.

Children.

People who trusted someone with money meant to help them.

I worked late.

Followed the records.

And helped uncover the missing funds.

When the investigation ended, my supervisor shook my hand.

“Good work, Paola.”

I smiled.

For the first time, nobody called me the waitress.

May you like

They called me an accountant.

And I had earned it.
