Chapter 9 - LORENZO'S LAST ORDER

The next morning, Lorenzo Rossi destroyed his own empire.

Not all of it.

But enough.

At eight o'clock, three attorneys arrived.

At nine, two federal investigators entered the estate.

At ten, financial records began leaving in sealed boxes.

By noon, half of New York seemed to know something had happened.

Phones rang constantly.

Business partners demanded explanations.

Men Lorenzo had known for twenty years suddenly became unavailable.

Others arrived angry.

One actually shouted in the foyer.

"You can't give them Aster!"

Lorenzo looked at him.

"I already did."

"Do you understand how many people are exposed?"

"Yes."

"You'll destroy the family."

Lorenzo glanced toward Leo sleeping in my arms.

"No."

He said it quietly.

"I'm saving mine."

The man left.

Travis agreed to cooperate.

Bellini did too.

Renato refused.

He sat with attorneys for six hours and said almost nothing.

But the documents spoke.

Shell companies.

False hospital invoices.

Insurance fraud.

Controlled medication diversion.

Bribery.

Money laundering.

Millions moved through programs designed to help sick children.

When I learned that part, I understood why Lorenzo stopped protecting anything.

Aster hadn't merely stolen money.

Hospitals had gone without supplies.

Clinics had paid inflated prices.

Families had suffered.

Some of the shortages Renato created probably hurt children he would never know existed.

Leo had simply been the first child Lorenzo could not look away from.

That evening, I found him alone in Elena's old study.

I knew it was hers because the room felt different.

Books.

Plants.

Photographs.

No weapons.

On the desk was a framed picture of Elena holding newborn Leo.

She looked exhausted.

Beautiful.

Happy.

Lorenzo stood at the window.

"They took Renato."

I closed the door.

"Where?"

"Federal detention."

"Will he stay?"

"Probably."

I waited.

He looked down.

"I wanted to kill him."

"I know."

"In the greenhouse."

"I know."

"In the dining room too."

"I definitely know that one."

A faint smile.

Then nothing.

"I've killed men for less."

I didn't ask for details.

I didn't need them.

"I know what I am, Maya."

"Do you?"

He looked at me.

"You think this week changed everything?"

"No."

"Neither do I."

He walked toward Elena's desk.

"I have done things I can't undo."

I said nothing.

He deserved the silence.

"I told myself they were necessary."

"Maybe some were."

"Some weren't."

His honesty hurt.

Because it made it impossible to turn him into a simple hero.

He wasn't.

He was a man who had lived violently.

A man trying to decide whether history was destiny.

"What happens now?" I asked.

"Investigations."

"To you?"

"Probably."

"Prison?"

"Possible."

My stomach tightened.

He saw it.

"Maya."

"What?"

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Look afraid for me."

"I'm allowed."

"No."

His voice softened.

"You have already carried enough because of men making terrible decisions."

I looked at him.

"You're making a good one now."

"Maybe too late."

"For Elena?"

His eyes moved toward her photograph.

"Yes."

"For Leo?"

He looked toward the door.

"No."

I understood.

It wasn't too late for Leo.

That was the difference.

He could not save Elena.

I could not save Lily.

But Leo was alive.

Sometimes redemption wasn't undoing the past.

It was refusing to repeat it.

I moved closer.

"Lorenzo."

"What?"

"Why didn't you tell me about the prosecutors?"

"Because if Renato learned through you, he'd think you were involved."

"So you protected me."

"Yes."

"That was annoying."

He almost smiled.

"I'll improve."

"No promises."

I looked at Elena's photograph.

"She was beautiful."

"She hated that picture."

"Why?"

"She said she looked exhausted."

"She had just given birth."

"I told her that."

"And?"

"She told me I was an idiot."

I laughed.

"Now I like her."

"You would have."

A sadness entered his face.

Then guilt.

"I think she would have liked you."

I looked down.

"That's complicated."

"Everything is."

"Lorenzo."

"Yes?"

"I am not replacing her."

"I know."

"And Leo isn't replacing Lily."

"I know."

"I need you to know that."

He stepped closer.

"I do."

My throat tightened.

For days, the air between us had changed.

Small things.

Coffee appearing beside me before dawn.

His hand at my back when I carried Leo down stairs.

The way he looked for me every time he entered a room.

The way I knew whether he had slept by the set of his shoulders.

Grief creates strange intimacy.

Danger creates it faster.

But this felt like something else.

Something quieter.

More frightening.

I stepped back.

He noticed.

"Too much?"

"Yes."

He nodded immediately.

No anger.

No offense.

"Okay."

That mattered more than a kiss would have.

Respect.

Choice.

Space.

Things Travis had never given me.

A knock sounded.

Nico entered.

"Sorry."

"What?"

"Renato's attorneys delivered something."

He handed Lorenzo an envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Not a threat.

A list.

Names.

Seven men.

Lorenzo recognized them.

I knew because his expression changed.

"Who are they?"

"People who manage the remaining operations."

"What does the list mean?"

Nico answered.

"If Renato goes down, they take over."

I stared at Lorenzo.

The Hydra problem.

Cut off one head.

Seven more waiting.

"What are you going to do?"

He folded the page.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then he walked to the fireplace.

Dropped the paper into the flames.

Nico frowned.

"Boss?"

"No."

"What?"

"No more bosses."

Nico stared.

Lorenzo watched the names burn.

"Call every captain."

"Why?"

"Tell them the organization is finished."

Nico looked as though Lorenzo had announced gravity was canceled.

"You can't just finish it."

"Watch me."

"People will resist."

"I know."

"They may come after you."

"I know."

"Leo."

"I know."

Nico looked at me.

Then back at Lorenzo.

"What do you want me to tell them?"

Lorenzo's answer came without hesitation.

"Tell them this is my last order."

The room went silent.

"No retaliation. No succession. No war."

He looked toward Elena's photograph.

"Anyone who wants legitimate work can stay with the legal companies."

"And the rest?"

"They walk."

"They won't all walk."

Lorenzo picked up his phone.

"Then they can explain themselves to the people receiving the records tomorrow."

Nico slowly smiled.

"You already copied everything."

"Three times."

"Where?"

"Somewhere Renato never understood."

"Where?"

Lorenzo looked at me.

"A place outside the family."

Trust outside blood.

The lesson Renato had never learned.

Nico left.

I stood beside Lorenzo.

"You really mean it?"

"Yes."

"You're ending something your family built for generations."

"Yes."

"Scared?"

"Terrified."

That surprised me.

Then he looked at me.

"Courage is apparently being terrified and doing the stupid thing anyway."

I smiled.

"Usually is."

He smiled too.

Outside the study, Leo began crying.

Both of us turned.

And for the first time, neither of us hurried because we were afraid he was dying.

We hurried because he was hungry.

There was a difference.

May you like

A beautiful one.
