Chapter 7 - THE FIRST STEP

Leo took the first step.

Everyone later remembered it as a miracle.

It wasn’t.

It was fourteen months of work.

It happened in a therapy gym on a Thursday.

No cameras.

No press.

No gala.

Leo stood between parallel bars wearing support braces.

His therapist, Monica, crouched in front of him.

“Shift.”

He shifted.

“Now forward.”

Nothing.

He tried again.

His right foot moved.

Set down.

Everyone froze.

Leo looked furious.

“Why did you stop talking?”

Monica laughed through tears.

“Because you just took a step.”

He looked down.

Then toward me.

“Dad?”

I was already crying.

Lila shouted from her chair:

“Do another!”

Leo did.

Smaller.

Messier.

Still a step.

Lila’s progress came differently.

She regained significant sensation but struggled with motor control.

For months she watched Leo advance faster.

I saw what comparison did to her.

The same poison wealth had put into me.

More.

Faster.

Better.

So one evening, when she refused therapy, I sat beside her.

“Are you angry?”

“No.”

“Yes.”

She stared at the floor.

“Leo is winning.”

My heart broke.

“This isn’t a race.”

“He can walk more.”

“Yes.”

“So he’s better.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

I almost gave her the usual parent speech.

Instead:

“I understand why it feels that way.”

Silence.

“But your body is not failing because his body is doing something different.”

That sentence sounded familiar.

Maybe because I needed it too.

Lila’s major milestone came three months later.

Not walking.

Standing independently for eleven seconds.

Eleven.

She demanded we count every one.

At eleven she fell into Monica’s arms laughing.

Noah was there.

He clapped louder than anyone.

Afterward he whispered to me:

“See?”

“What?”

“I didn’t heal them.”

“I know.”

“The doctors did?”

“Partly.”

“The therapists?”

“Partly.”

He frowned.

“Then who?”

I looked at Leo and Lila arguing over juice.

“Everybody did their part.”

Noah nodded.

Then:

“They did most.”

I smiled.

“Yes.”

May you like

They did.
